Spoilers ahead for One Piece
In the world of “One Piece,” it was unexpectedly disclosed that Jaguar D. Saul, a former associate of Robin, who was believed dead for quite some time, actually survived. Unfortunately, he couldn’t reach Robin during her long flight from the World Government, causing a bit of debate among fans.
Discussion arose about whether Saul should live or die, as some felt his survival weakened Robin’s narrative. On the contrary, others believed his survival enriched Robin’s tragic past, extending its depth beyond just Saul, and they thought he continued to move the storyline and its emotional impact forward by staying alive. This list will focus on other One Piece characters who, from a plot perspective, might seem dead but could potentially benefit from remaining deceased.
5. Vinsmoke Sora
Sanji’s Mother
- Debut: Episode 804
As a fervent admirer, I’d rephrase it like this: The Vinsmoke clan governs the Germa 66, a formidable military force with a penchant for fascist aesthetics, aiming to subjugate the North Blue and potentially expand beyond that. Judge, their leader, was hell-bent on transforming his sons into cold, superhuman instruments of warfare to further this agenda. However, his wife, the compassionate Sora, who was pregnant with our boys, opposed such a ruthless ambition.
Despite Judge’s insistence, Sora underwent a prenatal procedure that was meant to give his sons extraordinary physical abilities. Sora attempted to counteract this with a drug intended to reverse the surgery’s effects, but it only impacted their third son, Sanji. Sadly, Sanji endured bullying from his brothers due to this. Tragically, Sora fell gravely ill after taking the drug and passed away when Sanji was still young.
In this scenario, the judge exploited his wife’s demise to rigorously train his other children into becoming ruthless instruments, using them to torment Sanji, whom he deemed a disappointment. To find comfort amidst the hardship, Sanji honed his culinary talents, which his mother cherished deeply. With help from his elder sister Reiju, Sanji managed an escape, leading him to meet Zeff, who served as both his cooking and combat mentor, and whom he regarded as a second father figure.
Sora’s demise serves as a significant motif for Sanji, symbolizing the power of inherited resolve. Despite activating his powers later than his brothers, Sanji strives to preserve his human qualities, in part, as a tribute to his mother’s memory. Moreover, many influential individuals from Sanji’s past whom he admires are still alive. Altering Sora’s death would undermine him and his history, providing an immediate setback.
4. Donquixote Mjosgard
The One Good World Noble
- Debut: Episode 545
Mjosgard belonged to the Donquixote Family, a powerful lineage that once ruled over Dressrosa as World Nobles. Unlike one of their kin, Donquixote Homing who gave up his title, Mjosgard and his father, Shivercalero, continued to hold their noble status and indulge in its privileges until about 10 years ago.
Mjosgard suffered a loss when his Fish-Man servants, who had been enslaved, were pardoned by Jimbei as part of joining the Seven Sea Warlords. This prompted Mjosgard to venture to Fish-Man Island in an attempt to reclaim them. However, due to his lack of understanding of the perils of the world, Mjosgard was ambushed by his former slaves. Queen Otohime of Ryugu Kingdom intervened and opted to provide him with medical attention before sending him back to Mary Geoise. It took some time, but eventually, Mjosgide’s encounter with Otohime’s kindness led to a complete transformation in his character.
In much the same way as Homing previously did, Mjosgard proclaimed himself to be human rather than divine, and abolished slavery entirely within his domain. Yet, this change in conduct didn’t come without its repercussions. He found himself shunned by his fellow World Nobles, who criticized him harshly, drawing unfavorable comparisons with other members of his family. During their visit to the Levely accompanied by the royal family of Ryugu Kingdom, they were confronted by Charlos, a World Noble not dissimilar to Mjosgard himself in years gone by. However, Mjosgard stepped in to prevent Charlos from seizing Shirahoshi, the daughter of Otohime, and even permitted pirates to attack Charlos – an action that was highly disrespectful and serious in the eyes of the World Nobles.
As a result, he was put to death and crucified by Figarland Garling, who was both the Captain of God’s Knights and a future member of the Five Elders. Mjosgard’s execution served as an example that even World Nobles can face consequences if they oppose the group’s objectives. Although reversing his death wouldn’t entirely undo this event, it would significantly lessen the shock value of the first known World Noble being murdered, which contrasts with their perceived invincibility.
3. Ashura Doji
Loyal In The End
- Debut: Episode 910
I once observed a group of nine, distinctly adorned with red scabbards, loyal servants to Kozuki Oden, a young Daimyo whose magnetic personality and formidable strength drew an eclectic group of retainers towards him. Among them was a notorious outlaw, famously known as Ashura Doji. This individual, captivated by Oden’s unmatched power, chose to serve him as a retainer. However, with the passing of Oden and the mysterious disappearance of some Scabbards (who were propelled into the future through the supernatural abilities of his late wife, Hiyori), coupled with the senseless deaths of his companions who doubted their return, Ashura Doji lost faith in Oden’s cause.
Following this incident, Ashura resorted to banditry, establishing the Mt. Atama Thieves under the alias Shutenmaru. However, a former loyal Daimyo named Yasuie sacrificed himself in an attempt to aid the Kozuki Clan. Subsequently, Ashura reconnected with the Nine Red Scabbards. Unfortunately, their trust was betrayed by Kanjuro, one of their own, who secretly belonged to the rival Kurozumi clan and had been planted there by Orochi. Leveraging the powers of his Devil Fruit, Kanjuro crafted an illusion of Oden, which Ashura soon suspected as fake. Despite his suspicions, he valiantly protected his comrades until his demise. In the end, Ashura demonstrated his unwavering loyalty to Oden and was prepared to give up his life for their cause, a sacrifice that would diminish the impact of his character development leading up to it.
2. Edward Newgate
Roger’s Rival
- Debut: Episode 151
Edward “Whitebeard” Newgate, in essence, was a pirate leader bestowed the title of Emperor, symbolizing those pirates who were perceived by the World Government as extremely dangerous. Known for his rivalry and friendship with the deceased Gol D. Roger, there existed mutual regard between them. Interestingly, Newgate harbored little desire for power. He considered governing territories more as a means to safeguard them, to adopt crew members as his progeny, and ultimately, to offer financial assistance to his native island of Sphinx, which lacked governmental protection and experienced an uptick in criminal activities during Newgate’s childhood.
Despite facing numerous obstacles, he managed to build an enormous following, even gaining allegiance from several pirate captains who offered their crews as loyal subordinates. His crew engaged in a fierce battle against the government, with the ultimate goal of rescuing Ace. Tragically, this mission was unsuccessful and both Newgate and Ace lost their lives. Subsequently, Blackbeard, a former ally turned traitor under the name Marshall D. Teach, seized control over the crew’s territories after Whitebeard.
Blackbeard’s rule was solidified by Whitebeard’s demise, as many significant aspects of Whitebeard were adapted and manipulated by Blackbeard for his malicious intentions. If Newgate had survived, it would have undermined much of the groundwork Teach laid to assert control over his territories, and might have even made him hesitant to seize power aggressively. This could be the reason behind Blackbeard’s thorough execution of Newgate, with most of his subordinates firing numerous shots into Newgate’s body.
1. Jaygarcia Saturn
A Withered Elder
- Debut: Episode 151
Jaygarcia Saturn, initially named among the Five Elders, makes his debut with other elders in the narrative of One Piece. They often appear as the World Government’s public representatives throughout the story. However, unbeknownst to most, they all serve under Imu, each handling specific political sectors as the designated “Warrior Gods.” Saturn specializes in Science and Defense, and he discreetly joins Kizaru on their mission to assault Egghead.
Saturn, much like others in his position, is portrayed as a highly arrogant individual. Although he’s more sophisticated and polished compared to most, he doesn’t shy away from being condescending towards those beneath him, often regarding them as insignificant as insects. Furthermore, it’s revealed that he physically assaults his underlings if their actions disappoint him in any way.
Because Luffy managed to evade him, Imu felt personally responsible for this failure and ended up killing Saturn as a result. This act caused Saturn to deteriorate rapidly, with a dark energy emanating from his body. In quick succession, Figarland Garling took over Saturn’s position. The death of Saturn demonstrates the ease with which Imu discards the Five Elders, and it provides a glimpse into the ruthless and cruel nature of this enigmatic figure. Even towards one of his supposed trusted allies, Imu shows no mercy.
