Kraven The Hunter’s Opening Box Office Is Worst Yet

Summary

  • Kraven the Hunter had a disastrous global opening of $26 million, the worst for any Sony Marvel film to date.
  • The movie failed critically and financially, crushing hopes of revitalizing Sony’s Spiderverse franchise.
  • Audience trust eroded as repeated false promises of Spider-Man crossovers left fans uninterested in Sony’s latest effort.

As a long-time Marvel fan who has followed the Spider-Verse journey since its inception, I must say I am disheartened by the recent release of Kraven the Hunter. With high expectations and a rich history to live up to, this film unfortunately missed the mark for me, both critically and financially.

The widely-anticipated swan song of the Sony branch within the Marvel cinematic universe, “Kraven the Hunter,” has now hit theaters. Regrettably, it seems that not many are aware or interested in its debut a week ago.

As a cinephile, I must admit that it seems Kraven’s film has followed a pattern similar to recent Sony Spider-verse productions, garnering both critical rejection and poor financial performance. Initially, the movie, featuring Aaron Taylor Johnson, Ariana DeBose, and Russell Crowe, was met with reviews that painted an unpromising picture for a film that once held promise for Sony as a potential franchise starter, given the conclusion of their Venom trilogy.

Kraven the Hunter Fails Spectacularly In Opening Box Office Numbers

Based on IGN’s report, the debut of Kraven the Hunter at the box office fell short of even Sony’s most pessimistic expectations. Domestically, it earned slightly over $11 million across more than 3,200 screens. This opening is not only significantly worse than the already disappointing expected earnings for Venom 3, but it also sets a new record as the poorest performing of any Sony Marvel film. Even Madame Web, which opened with a previously record-low $15 million, managed to surpass this figure comfortably. In comparison, Morbius’ opening weekend grossed an impressive $39 million, far outperforming Kraven’s earnings.

For many of these launches, Sony has leaned heavily on international ticket sales to offset poor initial earnings. Yet, this film doesn’t appear to be well-received by audiences since it earned only $15 million from over 21,500 screens in 60 countries. The total revenue of $26 million is dismal and seems to mark the end of Sony’s hopes for establishing its own Marvel-like franchise.

Despite efforts from Sony, the cast, and director J.C. Chandor, the film “Kraven the Hunter” has faced disappointing box office numbers, preceded by poor reviews and low anticipation. Even as Chandor urged viewers to watch the movie, it seems his plea went unheard. In an attempt to boost attendance, Sony hinted at potential connections between the movie and the Spider-Man Universe from Marvel Cinematic Universe or suggested a possible crossover in future films.

It’s understandable that audiences might be tired of the hints about Spider-Man’s appearance, which had been a recurring theme in previous films. The creators of Venom: The Last Dance focused heavily on the possibility that Spider-Man could appear, but ultimately the storyline revolved around Eddie and Venom traveling to New York City. This might not have helped the movie’s reception, especially since rumors about Sony ending its association with the Spiderverse were spreading online just before Kraven the Hunter was released. Any remaining hopes among fans that Tom Holland would make an appearance were effectively squashed by these reports. As a result, Sony now faces another disappointing box office performance.
