As a long-time player of Marvel Future Fight, I can confidently say that each hero in this game has its unique strengths and weaknesses, and Doctor Strange is no exception. With his mystical powers and magical abilities, he offers a versatile playstyle that’s both engaging and effective.
In the game Marvel Rivals, it’s essential to select Vanguard wisely as they play a crucial part. The Vanguard you pick should complement your team structure for optimal results.
In direct combat, they stand firm against adversaries, absorbing blows that could dismantle your squad within mere moments. This is why having at least one Vanguard, who regulates the battle’s pace, is crucial.
In most teams within Marvel Rivals, there are typically two characters from each class present. But it is important to note that due to the absence of role queues or locks, you might find yourself relying on your teammates’ choices and may need to select a Vanguard character to bolster the team.
Discussing the Vanguard heroes, they excel in specific scenarios and contribute significantly to victory. To explore their effectiveness in the game Marvel Rivals, let’s examine our rankings for these characters and discover which ones can aid you in handling distinctive situations during battle.
8. Hulk
Here He Comes
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Hulk Smash | Transform from Hero Hulk into Monster Hulk for a limited period |
Indestructible Guard | Generate gamma shields for Hero Hulk and nearby allies, absorbing and converting damage into energy for Hulk Smash. |
Radioactive Lockdown | Emit gamma energy to render enemies immobilized and immune to all ability effects. Using Heavy Blow or Gamma Burst will prematurely remove this status. |
Incredible Leap | Hold SPACE to perform a charged leap that allows Hero Hulk to Knock Down flying enemies. |
Gamma Burst | Emit gamma-ray bursts to inflict damage |
If you don’t provoke Hulk into a frenzy, it means he’s not truly unleashing his full potential. He’s not a character for passive play, as his strengths primarily lie in charging the enemy’s backline and causing chaos among their ranks. I personally aim to target their Strategists, who are usually crucial figures. But remember, you won’t succeed without a backup healer by your side.
In essence, most of his skills don’t last long, and transforming into Bruce Banner usually means a return to your starting point. You possess Hulk’s extraordinary Jump, which can help dodge potential perils, but remember to factor in the time required for engagement during combat.
Unlike Vanguard, Hulk isn’t as effective because he needs to be very near enemies to attack them successfully. If you don’t get up close and personal, your melee attacks won’t have any impact. Moreover, if you miss a leap, you could end up in their rear lines, which can be dangerous as you might be destroyed instantly.
If he can protect allies, who will you guard in the lead? Unless you intend to outmaneuver opponents with your Duelists, I don’t understand why a shield is necessary. In my opinion, either the developers need to boost Hulk’s damage or revise one or two of his abilities because he seems weak as a Vanguard character.
When you play Hulk, the primary goal is to accumulate as much energy as you can to either turn into the Monster Hulk or the Heroic Hulk.
7. Thor
The God Of Thunder
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
God Of Thunder | Soar upwards and smite the ground after changing for a duration, inflicting damage on enemies within range. |
Storm Surge | HOLD to spin Mjolnir before dashing forward and Knocking Back enemies |
Lightning Realm | Summon lightning to restore Thorforce based on the number of enemies hit |
Awakening Rune | Consume Thorforce to enter the Awakened state, granting Bonus Health and enhancing Mjolnir Bash. |
Hammer Throw | Throw Mjolnir forward then returns |
Similar to the Hulk, Thor is often found engaged in intense battles at the forefront, taking on enemy tanks. Yet, it’s essential to understand that Thor’s abilities require the use of Thorforce, which could present a challenge for those new to intricate gaming mechanics.
Playing Thor requires a good deal of skill management, as you need to handle aspects like cooldown timing, positioning, and combat, as well as the Thorforce mechanic that boosts your abilities. The more risky your moves, the greater the potential rewards. With Thor, you can swiftly push back enemies and instantly boost your damage output.
As a player, I recommend asking the strategist for enough healing to ensure ample Bonus Health during my Awakened state. Maintaining sufficient Thorforce is crucial for having an optimal duration of this boost. This way, I can confidently engage enemy tanks without hesitation.
If your reserves aren’t sufficient, you might not get enough time to rejuvenate your Thorforce. Unless you’re in an awakened state, you’ll simply act as a absorber of damage.
You’ve got swift strikes using Mjolnir and an enhanced power level when awakened, but effectively utilizing these aspects can be challenging and may not suit every player given the availability of alternative, more accessible choices.
6. Magneto
Mutant Power
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Meteor M | Draw in all materials around to forge an iron meteor that deals massive damage upon impact. Absorbing enemy Projectiles enhances its power. |
Metallic Curtain | Change the magnetic field to form a metallic curtain, blocking all incoming Projectiles. |
Metal Bulwark | Conjure a metal shield around a chosen ally |
Iron Bulwark | Conjure an iron shield around himself |
Mag-Cannon | Convert the iron rings into a Mag-cannon and launch a metallic mass forward. The higher the stack, the higher the damage. |
It seems like it’s been a while since I’ve encountered any skilled Magneto players; could you all be around somewhere? I must admit, the ones I’ve faced in ranked matches haven’t shown much damage-dealing prowess. Magneto’s gameplay style is quite unique because his abilities make him more of a tough, durable character, rather than a high-damage dealer.
This character possesses a defensive tool, which becomes available following a brief cool-down period. Once activated, the shield serves as an impenetrable barrier against incoming harm, and it boasts additional abilities designed to safeguard both the user and their teammates. However, its functionality is limited primarily to defense, as it lacks significant mobility or offensive prowess, despite having a basic attack that pushes enemies away.
Although he may not seem great at first glance, with his skills, you can effectively guard your flankers and safeguard Duelists, allowing them to swiftly eliminate enemy tanks. You might not deal a lot of damage yourself, but by taking the brunt of enemy Duelists’ fire, you provide invaluable protection for your own Duelists.
In terms of safeguarding teammates, he’s a reliable choice next to Groot; yet, the brief lifespan of his shield leaves him exposed. His equipment seems to be more defense-oriented than mobility, and even his ultimate ability is defensive in nature, capable of warding off incoming projectiles.
He perfectly fills the role of a point tank, a Vanguard that holds the objective but doesn’t have enough damage to slay enemies, which is disappointing.
5. Captain America
Avengers Assemble
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Freedom Charge | Shield held high, carve a path forward, granting teammates Bonus Health and Movement Boosts. Using Living Legend or Leading Dash while this ability is active can Launch enemies. |
Leading Dash | Boost speed and enable Fearless Leap to leap into the air |
Vibranium Energy Saw | Hurt the energy-charged shield to strike enemies in a path |
Liberty Rush | Raise the shield and charge forward |
Super-Soldier Slam | Slam down from the sky onto the targeted area, Launching Up enemies |
Living Legend | Raise the shield to deflect incoming Projectiles, sending them ricocheting in random directions. |
A nimble and agile submarine, capable of causing chaos among the opposition and slipping out of tricky predicaments when needed, might seem straightforward, but it isn’t. I’ve been enjoying myself with Captain America in these games, but his gameplay is entirely self-centered, much like Venom, who can’t safeguard the team.
In simpler terms, you can’t safeguard your whole squad like Groot does. Instead, with Captain America, I recommend coordinating with your healer so they can keep you hidden for a strategic attack on the enemy team. This way, you can move in and out as needed, catching them off guard.
Before implementing an avoidance strategy, always remember to erect your defense first, as it may take a moment to activate. In any combat situation, don’t stand still – fight on the move and continually collect information about your opponents’ whereabouts.
Fighting as Captain America is enjoyable, yet once you’re stunned, there are no more choices left. You’re putting everything on the line by charging into enemy rear lines and engaging them directly. Your Vibranium shield can absorb some blows but its health isn’t sufficient to keep you safe for extended periods.
Contrary to Venom, who can endure intense gunfire, Captain America lacks many methods to withstand an enemy fortress.
Captain America’s Sprint has no cooldown; use that to your benefit.
4. Penny Parker
It’s Spider Time!
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Spider-Sweeper | Enhance the SP//drr suit, Launching enemies in its path and deploying Arachno-Mines, Spider-Drones, and Cyber-Webs repeatedly. |
Bionic Spider-Nest | Generate a Bionic Spider-Nest at a targeted area, periodically spawning Spider-Drones and creating Cyber-Webs. While on the cyber-web, you can gain healing over time, movement boost, and bonus health. |
Arachno-Mine | Deploy Arachno-Mines that can be concealed within the confines of a Cyber-Web. |
Cyber-Bond | Shoot a web strand that links to the targeted area or Cyber-web. If stretched too far, it will trigger a pullback. |
Cyber-Web Snare | Cast a webbing that Immobilizes enemies or creates a Cyber-Web. While in Cyber-Web, gain Healing Over Time, Movement Boos,t and Bonus Health |
In my view, Penny Parker is often underestimated as a Vanguard. Although players at high ELO levels may be able to neutralize her Bionic Spider-Nests and Arachno-Mines, she really shines in lower-ranked matches.
It’s astonishing how she manages to immobilize both regular enemies and their final forms (some heroes’ ultimates), and this ability can be reused every 3 seconds, making it remarkably powerful.
You can temporarily disable a tank or flanker, causing your team to concentrate on them, and as a result, they become less of an issue in the battlefield.
Her Cyber-Weaves provide her with Healing Over Time, Enhanced Mobility, and Extra Vitality, making them incredibly beneficial during combat on the battlefront.
If you prefer a Vanguard who metes out punishment for errors, she could be an excellent choice. Yet, it’s crucial to note that she lacks any defensive abilities. This means enemies will easily spot you, and you’ll absorb most of the damage. To survive, you’ll either need a reliable healer or strategically position yourself behind protective barriers.
Even though the internet allows you to bridge some gaps, it doesn’t provide complete invisibility from your adversaries’ notice. Characters such as Squirrel Girl or Moon Knight can swiftly disarm your traps and retaliate harshly if they find you exposed.
Playing as Penny Parker can be perilous unless you have a Vanguard watching your back. You might manage to solo-tank her against fragile characters, but it’s crucial to always consider the placement of your gear when facing other Vanguards. Losing your equipment in battle could significantly hamper your DPS output, which is something you’d rather avoid on the field.
3. Venom
Chaos Incarnate
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Feast Of The Abyss | Burrow underground for unrestricted movement, devious enemies above to deal damage and generate equivalent Bonus Health. |
Venom Swing | Launch webbing forward, allowing for a singular swing in the desired direction. |
Symbiotic Resilience | Generate Bonus Health against damage. The lower Venom’s health, the greater the Bonus Health. |
Frenzied Arrival | Dash to the target location from a certain height. Upon landing, damage nearby enemies and Launch Them Up. |
Cellular Corrosion | Unleash tentacles to Slow enemies within reach. Enemies unable to break free in time will suffer damage. |
Similar to Captain America, his main job is to act as a support tank, enabling flanking characters to eliminate Strategists effectively. In the absence of heroes equipped with Crowd Control capabilities on your team, you’re left without many options when dealing with Venom.
Venom exhibits a confrontational game strategy that lets him sneak up behind enemy lines, stir up confusion, and absorb substantial damage thanks to his special abilities. By darting into their rear guard, he can use the Venom Swing to cover great distances and return with it.
As a gamer, all I’ve gotta do with Venom is keep my aim sharp on those foes, timing my special moves just right – especially that bonus shield – and don’t forget to retreat for a tactical recharge when things get hectic!
A good Venom player can easily flank a Duelist or Strategist and return to the team, pretending nothing happened. Venom’s mobility is a godsend in a game where a tank like Groot has to walk from the respawn to the objective.
As a fan, I’d caution against charging headlong into the enemy’s backline without careful consideration if they have Luna Snow, Mantis, or Penny Parker on their team. These characters possess stun abilities that could leave you immobilized for quite some time, making you an easy mark. Always ensure you’re within the healers’ line of sight to stay safe and effective in your attacks.
As Venom, you possess high resilience, but you frequently encounter abilities that control crowds. Your bonus shield isn’t perpetual; once it depletes, you’re usually left with only 1 HP. Your attacks can sometimes miss their mark, and recklessly charging into enemy territory increases the risk of failure.
Essentially, mobility offers two contrasting outcomes: it allows for swift scouting or provides an opportunity for the enemy to take you out easily; there’s little room for middle ground.
You can turn off Easy Swing in settings to have more control over your Venom Swing.
2. Groot
I Am Groot
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Strangling Prison | Fire a massive vine cluster that pulls nearby enemies to its center and Imprison them. |
Thornlash Wall | Target a location and grow a Thornlash Wall. When Awakened, it strikes nearby enemies attacked by Groot and his allies, |
Ironwood Wall | Target a location and grow an Ironwood Wall; when Awakened, damage dealt by Groot and nearby allies gives Groot Bonus Health. |
Spore Bomb | Throw an explosive Spore Bomb that splits into multiple tiny explosive spores. |
Whenever I find myself in a ranked match and my team prefers a 4-5 duelist composition, I’m often left as the solo tank – making up about 70% of my gameplay. So, when duty calls, I pick Groot. After all, he’s not just a friend, he’s family!
In my opinion, he may not possess the agility of characters like Venom, Captain America, or Spiderman (Penny Parker), but there’s one thing that sets him apart – his unique ability to zone an area. This skill is unparalleled among all the Vanguards.
As a gamer, when it comes to pinning down a powerhouse hero like Thor who’s charging straight at me, I know Groot’s walls are my best bet. In a flash, I can slap those walls around him, trapping him and cutting off his escape route. That way, I can take him out without help from my team, as they won’t be able to swoop in and save him with their combined firepower.
The walls collaborate with your skills, providing you with extra health and healing advantages, which are particularly beneficial when you engage directly in combat. His ultimate ability can confine and cluster multiple enemies at a single location, leaving them exposed to your team’s Duelists.
It’s quite intriguing that his walls serve as a protective barrier for your team, allowing your strategists to heal them. This provides you with valuable time to assess the situation and concentrate on identifying any approaching flankers or Duelists.
Groot is a tough character that’s difficult to eliminate. His ultimate ability gathers enemies together for a potential team wipeout. Unfortunately, he moves quite slowly, similar to Magneto who must traverse from the starting point without many mobility abilities.
If your Vanguard isn’t near an objective, there’s a chance you might lose it. The fragile heroes won’t last long, and before Groot even shows up, the enemies would have advanced to another safety point.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself in situations where obstacles can be tricky, especially when they serve as hiding spots for my enemies, making it difficult for my Duelists to spot them. If you’re not sharp on game sense and spatial awareness, it can hinder your team’s damage output, giving the other team an edge.
Instead, you’ll pick up skills as you play along, and after mastering the fundamentals, Groot will prove invaluable. Enemies with fragile health won’t dare enter your combat range, and you’ll prevent heavy units from charging towards their objectives.
1. Doctor Strange
The Power Of Magic
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Eye Of Agamotto | Separate nearby enemies’ Souls from their bodies. Damage dealt to these Souls is transferred to their physical bodies. |
Cloak Of Levitation | Ascend and then enter a brief state of sustained flight |
Maelstrom Of Madness | Release Dark Magic to deal damage to nearby enemies |
Pentagram Of Farallah | Open portals between two locations, enabling all units to travel through them. |
Shield Of The Seraphim | Create a protective barrier against damage |
“What I appreciate about Doctor Strange is his ability to create portals. With this, you can swiftly transport your entire team to the enemy’s backlines, catching their Strategists off guard and swiftly advancing towards your objective.
The colossal regenerative barrier of Doctor Strange allows him to withstand heavy incoming attacks. With his transformative final move, Doctor Strange can instantly alter the course of a battle. In essence, when he activates his ultimate, you essentially have two target areas for enemies in the hit zone, which enables you to concentrate more on the damage output and less on the accuracy.
Despite not having the agility of Venom, he’s no slouch either. You can use the Cloak of Levitation to rise into the air and return to your team, or if you’re lucky, evade a disastrous Jeff ultimate (Good luck if Jeff is planning a dive off the map).
Additionally, you have the ability to defend against Hela’s ultimate using your shield. This feature comes in handy because Hela’s ultimate has an extremely wide area of effect, capable of wiping out your Strategists and Duelists instantaneously.
However, it’s not always sunshine and rainbows. There’s one thing that you should keep in mind, and that is managing Dark magic stacks.
It’s advisable to keep track of your Dark Magic accumulation to dodge the Anti-Heal effect, which negates any healing you receive. While Doctor Strange may not possess intricate gameplay like Thor, it’s certainly not a walk in the park either.
When all else fails, I can always open those magical gates, toss my squad or even a powerful Iron Man ultimate through, and accomplish the goal. He’s a real heavy-hitter as a Vanguard – he can safeguard his team, reposition us strategically, and bail us out of tough fights whenever necessary.
