Amazon Should Let Bosch: Legacy Go To Netflix (But It Won’t)

Summary

  • Bosch: Legacy is ending after season 3 on Amazon Prime Video in March 2025.
  • The Bosch: Legacy and Lincoln Lawyer crossover is unlikely due to Netflix and Amazon rivalry.
  • Fans can petition to save Bosch: Legacy as Amazon opts for a Ballard spin-off.

As a long-time fan of Michael Connelly’s intriguing and gripping detective series, I can’t help but feel a pang of dismay at the recent turn of events regarding Bosch: Legacy. With Amazon’s decision to cancel one of its most successful shows, it seems that they are overlooking a golden opportunity to further expand this captivating universe.

As a passionate cinephile, I have to share some bittersweet news about “Bosch: Legacy.” After three thrilling seasons on Prime Video, it will conclude in March 2025. In an unexpected turn of events, Amazon decided to cancel one of their top-performing series back in September 2024 – a decision that left many fans and myself puzzled.

In Michael Connelly’s extended literary world, Mickey Haller, the main character of The Lincoln Lawyer, is actually Harry Bosch’s half brother. These characters have shared the limelight in multiple crossover stories. Unfortunately, due to Netflix holding the rights for the TV adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer, and Amazon owning Bosch: Legacy, a joint appearance on screen has not been possible yet.

Netflix And Amazon Probably Wouldn’t Work Together to Facilitate A Bosch/Lincoln Lawyer Crossover, But It Would Be Great If They Did

Just like Netflix and Amazon share some common traits – such as canceling popular shows and raking in profits, but also being fierce competitors – fans wondered if there was a way for Netflix to pick up “Bosch: Legacy” after it was canceled by Amazon. This is because characters Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller, created by author Michael Connelly, share a connection as they belong to the same crime book universe, with both having had solo entries and crossovers. Moreover, their relationship is unique, as J. Michael “Mickey” Haller, Sr. is the father of both men, a well-known criminal defense lawyer in Los Angeles. In essence, these characters are like brothers from another mother.

It’s highly unlikely that Netflix and Amazon would coexist peacefully due to the intense rivalry that exists between them.

The potential for interconnected storylines between Bosch and Haller on television is vast, yet the collaboration between Netflix and Amazon seems elusive, much like how Sony and Disney shared custody of Spider-Man in recent times. However, Amazon has shown reluctance towards funding any further seasons of Bosch: Legacy, despite owning the rights to the Harry Bosch character. This leaves them with a significant advantage, as they plan to include him in guest roles for the Ballard spin-off. Unfortunately, this makes it impossible for Netflix to acquire the rights and create their own crime universe centered around Harry Bosch and his half brother.

Bosch: Legacy Would Easily Be Picked Up By Another Streamer Like Netflix If It Wasn’t For Amazon’s Half-Hearted Plans For The Bosch-verse

Back in the vibrant world of Michael Connelly’s Bosch-verse, I was thrilled when Amazon unveiled plans for two captivating spin-offs last February. One of these, set in the pulsating heart of Little Haiti, would follow Bosch’s trusted partner, Jerry Edgar, on a gripping undercover mission. The other, starring the tenacious cold case investigator, Renee Ballard, was slated to take center stage after her compelling collaborations with Harry Bosch in Connelly’s novels.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder why Amazon is unwilling to expand the Bosch universe further, when other streaming platforms might see potential in it. If Amazon believes that Harry Bosch’s solo tales in “Bosch: Legacy” have reached their conclusion, that doesn’t necessarily mean others share this view, especially the fans. It seems that Amazon wants to explore the “Ballard” spin-off, while still using Bosch as a supporting character to draw viewers to it and boost ratings. However, this approach appears to stray from Michael Connelly’s original vision for the Bosch-verse, as Renee Ballard shares co-lead status with Harry Bosch in all but one of her book appearances.
