Over time, we find ourselves drawn to an increasing number of self-produced works that hold our interest just as effectively as large-scale productions do.

hearing about Tenjutsu excited me greatly, especially since I learned that it’s a new creation by Sébastien Benard, the talented mind behind Dead Cells.

Despite these qualifications setting it apart, it’s clear that its combat system aims to deliver the same thrilling experiences found in games like Sifu and Dead Cells.

Given its blend of roguelike and management elements, reminiscent of fascinating trials such as Cult of the Lamb or Loop Hero, it’s only natural to have high anticipation for the game.

Additionally, it should be noted that the publishers of Tenjutsu are Devolver Digital, and you won’t find any video game bearing their seal that isn’t distinct in some way.

9. Little Nightmares 3

The Continuation of An Iconic Trilogy

It’s not often that an independent game turns into a series, but Little Nightmares 3 is breaking new ground and establishing a significant benchmark.

Given that the creator of ABZÛ, The Pathless, and Journey is embarking on a new project, I’m not at all surprised by this development. On the contrary, I find myself drawn to it significantly, particularly considering their emphasis on the significance of narrative and atmosphere in shaping the user experience.

7. Replaced

Promising Retro-futuristic Gem

I find the preview trailer for what’s been replaced truly astounding, and I can hardly contain my excitement as the time draws near for us to experience it personally.

This 2.5D sci-fi, retro-futuristic action platformer appears to be living up to the anticipations of cyberpunk enthusiasts, with its concept, visuals, and music all looking extraordinary.

In a narrative centered around corruption, nuclear mishaps, and an unbalanced distribution of power, REPLACED plans to blend cinematic platforming, retro-style pixel art, and fluid, dynamic fight sequences, which has ignited a great deal of excitement among fans.

6. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Pushing the Boundaries of the Indie Tag

I don’t consider the phrase “it doesn’t look indie” to be entirely positive, but I believe it accurately describes “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33“.

Speaking of it, it brings to mind Lies of P not just due to its inspiration drawn from France’s Belle Époque era, but also because its potential seems so enticing that it stirs up a degree of doubt.

Initially, my skepticism about “Lies of P” was unfounded, which makes me more intrigued by this turn-based RPG that incorporates real-time elements. I have high hopes that it will live up to the promise of its demonstrations, making it a game worth looking forward to.

As a gamer, I’m pretty stoked about this game even if it doesn’t quite reach its full potential. If it manages to deliver just half of what it promises, it’s still going to be a fantastic experience. So, I’ve got high hopes and I’m fully trusting that it will deliver.

5. Earthblade

Celeste’s Creators New Journey

Given that Celeste is one of the greatest pixel-art games ever made, it’s only natural to eagerly anticipate the arrival of Earthblade.

The makers behind the amazing platformer are planning to leverage their expertise in creating a game that combines smooth exploration, challenging battles, and intriguing puzzles – essentially, a Metroidvania-style adventure filled with secrets waiting to be discovered.

It’s no surprise that Celeste exceeds expectations in all aspects, but its visuals and music seem to originate from a different dimension altogether.

So far, we haven’t seen much of Earthblade, but given how enticing it already appears, I can barely fathom the excitement when it becomes accessible.

4. Crowsworn

A Long-awaited Counterpart to Hollow Knight

In terms of visual appeal, it’s safe to assert that among the Metroidvania genre, few, if any, can rival the quality of Crowsworn.

Despite the fact that a significant amount of time has elapsed since its initial unveiling, the game continues to improve in appearance. Although I’m disappointed by the delay, the recent trailers suggest that the additional time taken may have been necessary for its development.

While there’s no denying the resemblances to Hollow Knight, over time it has carved out its unique identity and I believe it won’t be shy in comparison to the genre’s top-tier games.

Initially, my fascination with Crowsworn sprang from the hope it might fill the void left by an unlaunched Metroidvania game. However, my intrigue has grown as I’ve come to appreciate it for its unique merits and what it promises to become independently.

3. Hyper Light Breaker

The Birth of a Universe

Given its status as one of the top pre-apocalyptic games, Hyper Light Drifter has significantly fueled my affection for independent games. Consequently, my anticipation for Hyper Light Breaker is sky-high.

Based on Heart Machine’s past achievements, I am utterly convinced that their team has the skills to produce an exceptional indie game that will leave everyone who experiences it in awe.

With “Hyper Light” now a franchise, it’s like a wish fulfilled as the team gets to explore their creativity to build a captivating and evocative world filled with breathtaking audiovisual splendor that sets new standards.

Despite a distinct change in gameplay compared to its predecessor, Hyper Light Breaker is anticipated to be one of the most significant releases in 2025. Therefore, I want to emphasize my high level of confidence in it.

2. Slay the Spire 2

The Future Most Addictive Sequel

Frankly speaking, despite my belief that Slay the Spire doesn’t necessitate a follow-up, I can’t wait to purchase it the moment it hits the shelves.

It’s quite astonishing that the concept of Slay the Spire 2 aims to outdo a near-perfect deck-building roguelike game, which is no easy task.

No matter the circumstances, Mega Crit’s abilities are so impressive that I have complete trust in them, perhaps even more so than I would in a large corporation with a substantial budget.

I firmly believe that, with its introduction of fresh adversaries, incidents, and riches, Slay the Spire 2 is poised to match the greatness of the initial game, and maybe even surpass it.

1. Hollow Knight: Silksong

A Never-ending Hope

As a member of the vast gaming community eagerly anticipating Hornet’s debut, it came as no surprise that Hollow Knight: Silksong was high on everyone’s wishlist.

Even though I’m keen to join them, when it comes to diligently working and ensuring high-quality results, that team is undoubtedly Team Cherry.

Although I might take issue with their approach towards communicating about the progress of “Silksong,” there’s no question in my mind about its eventual high-quality outcome.

I believe that Hollow Knight: Silksong will live up to the anticipation of everyone who’s been eagerly waiting for it, whether it’s about the settings, the bosses, or even the supporting characters and battles.

We’re talking about the heir to the best metroidvania in history, so I think they deserve our patience. Just let’s hope we won’t have to wait beyond 2025.
