As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the journey of Joker: Folie à Deux has been a rollercoaster ride. The first Joker film was a masterpiece that left me spellbound, and I was eagerly awaiting its sequel. However, the reception to Joker: Folie à Deux was quite unexpected, to say the least.
Despite the extraordinary achievement of the 2019 movie “Joker”, its follow-up, titled “Joker: Madness Duet“, has been met with both critical and commercial disapproval this year. Though audiences and critics have criticized the film, there’s a common agreement that the acting skills of the main actors, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, were commendable. As the awards season in the film industry approaches, “Joker: Madness Duet” is starting to receive some prestigious nominations, which could potentially lead to a win for the much-maligned sequel.
The Joker films directed by Todd Phillips started with the title release in 2019 and garnered numerous prestigious awards, such as the top honor at the Venice Film Festival and two Oscars for Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir). By the end of its theater run, it made over a billion dollars globally and held the record for highest-grossing R-rated film until then. It became a cultural sensation. Initially intended as a single movie, Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver later decided on a sequel, drawing inspiration from an idea Phoenix had in a dream. Released five years after the original and with a hefty budget of $200 million, Joker: Folie à Deux failed to turn a profit, earning $206 million at the box office. It was met with disapproval from both audiences and critics, which prevented it from leaving as significant an impact as its predecessor. However, some recent awards season chatter might soften its image.
As a movie enthusiast, I eagerly anticipated the announcement of the shortlists for ten categories at the 97th Academy Awards on December 17th. To my excitement, “Joker: Folie à Deux” found itself among the contenders in the Sound category, joining fellow comic book film “Deadpool & Wolverine”. Only five of the ten nominated films will proceed further, based on the votes of the Sound Branch members by early January. The final nominations for all categories at the 97th Academy Awards ceremony will be revealed on January 17th.
The news follows closely after “Joker: Folie à Deux” premiered on Max, merely two months following its initial theater screening. The second installment received poor critiques upon release and managed to gross $37 million during its domestic opening weekend, falling short of initial box office predictions. In stark contrast to the original’s ‘B+,’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” garnered a ‘D’ from surveyed audiences through CinemaScore, marking it as the lowest-rated score for any comic book film to date. Remarkably, “Terrifier 3” outperformed “Joker: Folie à Deux” in its second weekend, while the former saw a massive 81% drop at the box office – an unprecedented decline for a movie based on DC characters. However, since its premiere, notable creatives such as Hideo Kojima and Quentin Tarantino have publicly praised and approved of the film and its themes.
Following a harsh reception at the movie box office, Joker: Folie à Deux might find some luck by receiving a highly sought-after Oscar nomination. If it manages to get nominated and win, this wouldn’t be the first instance of a critically derided DC film taking home an Academy Award. Back in 2016, Suicide Squad garnered an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
