Every Mass Effect Companion’s Status Ahead of ME4

As a seasoned space-faring explorer and intergalactic diplomat, I can’t help but marvel at the rich tapestry of characters that populate the universe of Mass Effect. Each one, unique in their own way, brings a distinct flavor to the grand cosmic saga.

It appears that the upcoming game, Mass Effect 4, may bring back the storyline of Commander Shepard, suggesting that the ‘Destroy’ ending from the original trilogy is now considered canon. Given the numerous possibilities across all three previous games, it seems challenging to address the outcome of every character in Mass Effect 4.

Regardless of the complexity in keeping tabs on various locations across the galaxy, BioWare seems resolute about establishing solid lore, as evidenced by Liara’s return in the trailer for Mass Effect 4. The outcomes of the franchise’s characters hinge greatly on Shepard’s interactions with their loyalty missions and personal storylines. At the start of the next game, each character might be in a different situation.

The Potential Fates of Mass Effect’s Original Companions

Ashley Williams and Kaidan Alenko

In the first game of Mass Effect, only one Alliance officer from the Virmire mission can still be alive. This is because there’s a compulsory death during this mission. The surviving officer will rejoin the team in ME3, allowing them to witness Shepard’s journey until the end. However, if the relationship with this character deteriorates and becomes hostile, they can also meet their demise in a firefight initiated by the player.

Liara T’Soni

Given her notable role throughout the trilogy and her appearance in the trailer for Mass Effect 4, it can be expected that Liara will make a return to the game. If she maintains her position as the Shadow Broker, she is likely to play a significant role in shaping the rebuilding galaxy.

Tali’Zorah vas Normandy

Following her survival in the initial game, Tali might have met her demise during ME2’s Suicide Mission, similar to other companions, or suffered a tragic fate on Rannoch in Mass Effect 3. If the player chooses to align with the Geth and the Quarians are nearly extinct as a result, Tali may choose to take her own life due to these actions. However, if her death can be prevented, she becomes a crucial figure in the rebuilding of her race.

Garrus Vakarian

In the trilogy, Garrus is typically one of Shepard’s most devoted allies. However, in the second game, there was a possibility he could have been left behind. Instead of joining the Suicide Mission, he might have been stranded on Omega during his tenure as Archangel, potentially getting overrun. After the Reaper threat was neutralized, it is assumed that he would have re-joined the Palaven military to help them.

Urdnot Wrex

In the grand scheme of things, two crucial events shape Wrex’s role within the galaxy. One instance, during Mass Effect 1, could have led to his untimely demise if Shepard failed to dissuade him. Another potential conflict arises in Mass Effect 3 when Wrex might find himself at odds with Shepard if misled about the genophage cure. However, when not deceived, Wrex continues to be a significant Krogan figure, basking in glory on Tuchanka.

Possible Outcomes of Companions Introduced in Mass Effect 2

As a devoted fan, I must admit that one unavoidable feature in “Mass Effect 2” is the potential loss of my squadmates during the Suicide Mission at the game’s end. The heart-wrenching reality is that Shepard could even face the grim fate of losing the entire crew and meeting an untimely demise. This unfortunate outcome can be triggered by neglecting to upgrade the Normandy sufficiently or by making regrettable choices when assigning companions to various mission roles. However, if they miraculously survive, some of them might just reappear in “ME4.

Miranda Lawson

In the storyline of Mass Effect 3, Miranda may sustain fatal injuries at the hands of Kai Leng if Shepard fails to give her a crucial warning, or she might be shot by her father as she strives to escape Cerberus and confront her dark past while attempting to save her sister Oriana. If Miranda manages to survive, she can be found lending assistance to the Alliance in their efforts to rebuild the galaxy following the Destroy ending. It’s not unlikely that we could witness Miranda transforming into a dedicated ally of these forces, leveraging her anti-Cerberus background, in the subsequent game as a reformed turncoat.

Jacob Taylor

In a romantic partnership with Dr. Brynn Cole, Jacob might have decided to settle down and move further away from active combat as the galaxy undergoes reconstruction. Although it was previously hinted that he switched allegiances to the Alliance permanently, he could follow a path similar to Miranda, given their questionable past.

Mordin Solus

Based on whether Mordin releases the Genophage cure in Mass Effect 3 or not, he will either have made a valiant sacrifice to rectify his mistakes if he dies due to Shepard’s perceived betrayal, or his death could be seen as in vain if the genophage continues. Alternatively, if Mordin deceives Shepard and allows the genophage to persist, he may continue living and collaborating with the Salarians on further research. The emotional impact of Mordin’s potential demise and the Krogan storyline’s popularity make it unlikely that Mordin would survive by continuing his work, but this scenario could provide an opportunity for his return in future stories.

Jack

As a gamer, I find myself in control of Shepard at Grissom Academy, where the fate of a teacher named Jack hangs in the balance. If I choose to ignore my mission during ME3, Jack is captured and transformed into a Phantom enemy. However, if I assist her, it’s not just her life that’s at stake but the lives of her students instead. The outcome determines whether Jack appears more upbeat or even grimmer than ever in Mass Effect 2 if she reappears, based on whether her biotic pupils lived or perished.

Grunt

Following the Rachni Queen mission in Mass Effect 3, there was a possibility that Grunt perished in battle on Utukku. Should he have lived through it, he is depicted enjoying festivities on Tuchanka alongside Wrex. If he continued his bond with such a notable Krogan, future installments of the game might portray Grunt as one of the leaders among his species.

Thane Krios

Because Thane suffered a terminal illness and was mortally wounded by Kai Leng in Mass Effect 3, it’s highly unlikely that he will reappear by the end of the trilogy.

Samara and Morinth

In Mass Effect 2, if you choose to betray Asari Justicar Samara and side with her daughter Morinth, then it’s possible for Shepard to kill Samara. If Samara survives, she may continue her crusade against her Ardat-Yakshi daughters in Mass Effect 3, potentially leading to her taking her own life. However, if you avoid this tragic choice, Samara can either carry on with her duties or find peace with her daughter Falere. Both outcomes suggest that Samara’s long history of adventures may not have concluded yet. Unfortunately, Morinth does not survive the events of Mass Effect 3; if she was chosen over Samara in Mass Effect 2, she later appears as a Banshee enemy in the trilogy’s final moments.

Legion

In the gaming world, I’ve come across a Geth that met its end for the sake of its kind. Whether it tried futilely to eliminate me, Commander Shepard, or gave up its individual existence to merge with the Geth network, it’s no longer around in its original form. Interestingly, if this Geth was handed over to Cerberus instead of being recruited earlier, you might encounter it as an adversary in Mass Effect 3.

Zaeed Massani

In the heat of Mass Effect 3’s anti-Cerberus arc, I, this battle-hardened mercenary, had the chance to lay down my life for a Volus ambassador – a moment that could have ended my story prematurely. But here I am, thriving in the aftermath of the trilogy’s climax, enjoying a laidback lifestyle as a freelance soldier, setting my own terms and charting my own course.

Kasumi Goto

It’s uncertain whether Kasumi’s absence after the explosion in ME3 signifies her death or just her reluctance to show that she’s alive to Shepard. However, should she support the player, she emerged from the shadows to contribute actively to the Crucible mission.

The Limited Possibilities of Mass Effect 3’s New Companions

In the final battle for Earth within this game, there is a standard death scene for any squad members if the player’s Emergency Medical System (EMS) score is too low. This death sequence involving the Reaper Harbinger is the only instance in the entire trilogy where characters like Liara meet their end. Consequently, this moment is seen as highly controversial within the game’s lore. However, with the exception of this unique event, most newly introduced characters from Mass Effect 3 are generally guaranteed to survive.

James Vega

In the role of a dedicated follower who stands firm with Shepard till the end, James’ character development primarily hinges on the impact of his commander’s moral compass on his own outlook. Since Shepard’s influence in Mass Effect 4 has been hinted at in its trailer, it’s reasonable to anticipate that James will be profoundly influenced by Shepard’s example if he reappears.

Javik

By the end of the story, whether or not Javik utilizes the Prothean memory shard significantly alters his character. Reliving the past memories leaves him contemplating suicide after completing the mission, but choosing to leave them untouched results in a more optimistic evolution for Javik within Mass Effect 3. Contrary to expectations, he becomes more sociable, eager to work with Liara on a book and gain admiration from the Hanar without the shard’s weight. If his darker persona is any indication, it’s the amicable Javik that stands a chance of reappearing in ME4.

EDI

In the “Destroy” ending, it appears that EDI might have been destroyed because she’s a synthetic being. Yet, since her consciousness could potentially exist independently of her physical android form, there’s still a possibility for her to reappear in the future.
