The Best Strategy Games Of 2024

2024 has been a veritable smorgasbord for strategy game enthusiasts like myself! From delving into the ancient mysteries of Age of Mythology: Retold to commanding the futuristic armadas of Sins of a Solar Empire 2, this year has been nothing short of a tactical treatise.

2024 indeed offered a rich tapestry of gaming experiences, didn’t it? Ranging from the legendary civilizations of Age of Mythology to the expansive futuristic landscapes of Sins of a Solar Empire 2, gamers found themselves spoiled for choice. Strategy aficionados could delve into the epic clashes of Field of Glory: Kingdoms or the intricate tactics of Classified: France ’44. Those with an interest in modern warfare could partake in thrilling naval battles via Sea Power: Missile Combat In the Missile Age or experience real-time conflicts in WARNO. With such a vast array of games, 2024 was a year to rejoice for strategy game enthusiasts everywhere.

2024 offered a strong selection of mainstream games, including Black Myth:Wukong, Helldivers 2, Palworld, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, Stellar Blade, among others. Lately, Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile have been dominating the Steam player rankings. It’s never been a more exciting time to be a gamer.

Towards the end of the year, it’s a great time to reflect on the year gone by and compile a list of my top 10 favorite strategy games from 2024. Keep in mind that this list is subjective, so you might not find some of the games you played, if so, feel free to share your thoughts through comments or email!

10 – Armored Brigade 2

2024 finds me pondering whether Armored Brigade 2 should grace this list, or if I should hold out until late 2025 for its accolades. Competing against Scourge of War: Remastered, a revamped game from more than a decade ago, I believe Armored Brigade 2 holds its ground. Transitioning to 3D elevated an already outstanding Cold War title, providing quicker decision-making, superior unit placement, enhanced battlefield control, and more engaging cinematic battles.

9 – Tactical Breach Wizards

Title “Tactical Breach Wizards” is an engaging and humorous game with impressive design. It’s a blend of puzzle and turn-based strategy that maintains balance throughout its campaign, offering players a wide range of moves and strategies without feeling restrictive. The dialogue between missions will leave you in stitches, the game has a great visual aesthetic, and it’s so affordable it’s hard not to endorse it. However, it doesn’t rank higher on my list because of its ordinary unit abilities and the fact that it leans too heavily on puzzles for my preference. Many other gaming websites have awarded “Tactical Breach Wizards” their Strategy Game of the Year, and while I appreciate its broad appeal, the year 2024 saw other exceptional games that went unnoticed which I believe are far superior to it.

8 – Sea Power: Naval Combat In The Missile Age

Initially, I didn’t anticipate Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age to make it into my top 10 games this year due to its early access phase, lacking tutorials, campaigns, or numerous missions. However, the game’s rich detail in naval units and weapon systems, coupled with a straightforward yet intricate mission editor, has convinced me that Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age is worthy of recognition. If you’re a fan of the Cold War era and its potential naval conflicts, your choices are limited. Fortunately, among these few options, Sea Power stands out as an exceptional choice.

7 – WARNO

WARNO, developed by Eugen Systems, embodies their gaming style completely and represents an advanced iteration of their formula. This game transports players back to 1989, offering a narrative reminiscent of another Cold War escalating into conflict. In this scenario, the armies of the Warsaw Pact engage in battle against NATO for control over Europe’s future. If you seek a single-player experience immersed in the Cold War that is intricate, visually stunning, expansive in scale, and offers countless hours of gameplay, WARNO: Army General could be exactly what you’re searching for. The slower unit movement and more targeted unit selection decks make learning, managing, and experimenting a breeze. While my personal preference leans away from Cold War-themed games, if you’re captivated by this era, I have no reservations in saying that WARNO is one of the best games ever coded during this timeframe for those who share your passion.

6 – Age of Mythology: Retold

I’m really enjoying Age of Mythology: Retold! At first, I had my doubts when it was announced, but boy, was I wrong! This version is simply outstanding. If you’re a fan of Ensemble Studios’ Age of Empires series and haven’t tried Age of Mythology yet, you should definitely give Retold a shot. It’s essentially the Age of Empires experience with mythical creatures and heroes thrown in. With an enormous amount of content for a low price, stunning graphics, and three single-player campaigns, Age of Mythology: Retold is not only one of the best RTS games available in 2024, but it’s also a must-play for anyone with even a casual interest in real-time strategy games. You’d be missing out if you didn’t check it out!
