As a long-time fan of League of Legends, I must say that the recent developments in both gameplay and lore have left me absolutely thrilled! The upcoming changes in 2025 and the dramatic twist in Arcane season 2 have truly shaken up the world of Runeterra.
MAJOR SPOILERS for Arcane season 2 ahead. Proceed at your own risk.
It appears that League of Legends is stepping into an era of significant transformation, encompassing both its gameplay mechanics and storyline. From a gameplay perspective, 2025 promises numerous adjustments for League of Legends (LoL), introducing a new neutral creature, revamping the ranked system, modifying the loot system, among other enhancements. Simultaneously, the narrative of League of Legends is undergoing a swift evolution, largely influenced by Arcane season 2. This deviation from the established canon paves the way for further character developments and potential timeline alterations. Notably, both the gameplay and lore adjustments share a common thread: they are heavily intertwined with Noxus.
The powerful nation known as Noxus, recognized by both League of Legends players (with champions like Darius, Draven, and Swain) and Arcane viewers (thanks to Ambessa and Mel Medarda’s complex ties to their homeland), could soon welcome a new member – Boram Darkwill, the ex-emperor of Noxus. This is surprising because Ambessa, who recently joined League of Legends to mark Arcane’s second season, died in the show. However, since Ambessa has shown that deceased characters can be part of the game, it’s possible for Boram Darkwill to join the roster as well, especially considering the 2025 Noxian theme.
Ambessa Joining League of Legends Could Be Good News for Boram Darkwill
Boram Darkwill is a character shrouded in mystery, yet his actions have significantly impacted the histories of several League of Legends champions. Few details are available about his reign as emperor, but by the time he grew old, he was completely controlled by Leblanc and the Black Rose, who drove him to an obsession with achieving immortality. This fixation led Darkwill to order the Noxian invasion of Ionia. The war that ensued was brutal from the start, but as the Ionian forces started to fight back, a confused and desperate Darkwill resorted to increasingly vicious strategies, such as contaminating the land with toxic substances and sending Noxian children into battle. In the end, Darkwill failed to realize his dreams; he was assassinated in a coup led by his disgraced general Swain, who brought an end to the war in Ionia and established a new government for Noxus.
In light of Boram Darkwill’s significant influence on numerous Noxian and Ionian champions, it appears that he would make a fitting addition to the game. However, there is a clear challenge: he has already passed away. Traditionally, all champions in League of Legends have been portrayed as alive in the lore, which facilitated interactions among various characters during lore events and spin-offs like the Ruined King RPG. However, it’s evident now that this isn’t a strict requirement. Characters such as Ambessa who died at the end of Arcane still exist in League of Legends. With this precedent shift, there is now an opportunity for characters from the rich history of LoL lore who have perished to become playable. Among all potential candidates, Boram Darkwill stands out due to his potential to provide insights into various aspects of Runeterra if Riot were to delve deeper into his background.
In the game “League of Legends,” there are several undead characters. Therefore, it’s possible for him to return in this form. However, portraying Darkwill during his time as an emperor, rather than as an undead character, seems more fitting given his role in the story.
Appropriate Times to Add Boram Darkwill to League of Legends
2025 could be an ideal moment for introducing Darkwill, considering the year’s initial focus on Noxus. The fresh neutral monster, Atakhan, is a demon tied to serve the Black Rose, and the entire map will be adorned with Noxian elements. It seems fitting that a key figure in Noxian history would participate in these celebrations.
As a passionate fan of League of Legends, I can’t help but ponder about the possibility of Darkwill making an appearance in 2025. Given Riot’s focus on the Noxian theme, it wouldn’t be entirely unexpected if they decided to hold off on introducing him to avoid overcommitting.
Since so little is revealed about Darkwill’s life, it’s challenging to predict his champion type, yet this ambiguity works in our favor, providing Riot Games with ample creative liberty. This could lead to a variety of champions, ranging from a traditional Noxian tank top-laner to an unconventional tactical support. Whether Darkwill will ever grace the Rift as a playable champion is still uncertain, but with Ambessa and Arcane’s involvement, his chances have definitely increased.
