Well, I must say that 2024 has been quite a year for Nintendo fans! As someone who grew up with a GameCube and a heart full of love for Mario Party and Paper Mario games, this lineup has been nothing short of a dream come true.
2024 proved to be a successful year for Nintendo and the Nintendo Switch; however, its triumphs were somewhat eclipsed by the imminent launch of their next-generation console, details of which are expected to be unveiled soon.
Despite some exceptional exclusive games for Nintendo Switch users this year, our focus on the best of 2024 won’t overlook them. In our retrospective look at the year, we’ll be revisiting the top seven Nintendo exclusives that were launched this year.
8. Mario vs. Donkey Kong
An enjoyable remake
Despite concentrating on upcoming projects, Nintendo is set to unveil some games this year. Notably, there’s a common thread linking many of these releases – they are remakes.
No problem at all, since the revamped version of “Mario vs. Donkey Kong,” originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2024, offers a delightful platforming journey that’s worth experiencing.
This game caters to both beginners and experienced players by balancing accessibility with challenging modes for experts. As such, every Nintendo Switch owner can find something appealing here. It seamlessly aligns with its easy-to-play nature, refreshed charming graphics, and top-notch controls, making it surprising we didn’t remake this game earlier.
The game “Mario vs. Donkey Kong” may not garner any awards, yet that’s not necessary. What it does provide is top-notch platforming, a skillset synonymous with Nintendo, and it does so abundantly. If you’re seeking some enjoyable entertainment in a short span of time, then this could be your ideal choice.
7. Princess Peach: Showtime!
Lights, Camera, Action
If you’re searching for a fresh platformer game instead of a re-make of an old classic, then Princess Peach: Showtime! is exactly what you’re after.
Long overdue, Nintendo should provide Princess Peach with a leading part that truly fits her character. The stage production idea, charming outfits, and appealing tunes are all hits.
Although some parts of the gameplay may seem repetitive at times and not all stages are particularly exciting, the challenging boss fights make them worthwhile and encourage continued play.

6. Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition
Party like it’s 1985
Recently, Nintendo has been releasing updated versions of classic games that fans adore, such as Tetris 99 and F-Zero 99, which are incredibly fun to experience.
With “Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition“, Nintendo emphasizes swift navigation through some of the toughest sections in timeless NES games.
As a gamer, I can tell you it’s like diving into WarioWare for classic gaming. You’ll find yourself hurrying through over 150 challenges in games such as Super Mario Bros., Metroid, Donkey Kong, and many others.
This new addition is an ideal fit for the concise gaming experience offered by Nintendo’s digital collection, providing an opportunity for the company to highlight some of its most memorable moments from past titles.
5. Mario & Luigi: Brothership
A much-anticipated return
After a span of six years since the launch of “Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey“, it’s at last time for another installment in the “Mario & Luigi” series.
In the game “Mario & Luigi: Brothership“, you’ll find all the elements that one would anticipate in a Mario RPG: vibrant, delightful graphics, wit, and an exceptional battle mechanism.
Produced by Acquire, famous for their creation of Octopath Traveler II, Brothership demonstrates that the Mario & Luigi series can continue even without AlphaDream. It offers an authentic role-playing game (RPG) experience with familiar characters we adore and fresh faces added to the mix.
There’s lots more to explore and enjoy beyond the main plot, let me clarify that this is a rich and substantial experience. It seems like recent Mario RPG games were moving away from this feel, but if Nintendo intends to develop further Mario RPG titles, Brothership offers an excellent foundation.
4. Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD
Dark Moon
2013’s “Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon” transformed the underrated, yet adored GameCube debut game into a top-tier title for the Nintendo 3DS.
The 2024 re-release, “Luigi’s Mansion 2: Dark Moon HD“, breathes new life into the game, overcoming the constraints of the original 3DS hardware. Previously, the game was hindered by these limitations, but the high-definition remake for Nintendo Switch eliminates that issue.
Enhancements in quality of life, stunning graphics, and a touch-up on gameplay mechanics all serve to show appreciation for the beloved title, Luigi’s Mansion 2.
Despite sharing the fundamental structure and core elements, an unexpected level of effort was invested in the HD version, setting it apart and making it a rewarding experience, regardless of how often you’ve delved into the world of Dark Moon.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Super Zelda Maker
The Zelda games from this era have presented two unique art styles on the Nintendo Switch, each captivating in their individual charm. The game Echoes of Wisdom borrows the charming aesthetics seen in the remake of Link’s Awakening, enhancing the sense that Hyrule serves as a vibrant playground for discovery and innovation.
The blend of visuals and gameplay in Echoes of Wisdom is quite remarkable, as it skillfully merges the style of play from classic 2D Zelda games with the innovative elements introduced in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
In a fresh take, “Echoes of Wisdom” seems akin to how Nintendo’s cherished Zelda series might interpret Super Mario Maker. It empowers players by offering them an impressive degree of creativity, enabling them to tackle puzzles, manage enemies, and delve into the mystical realm of Hyrule.
It’s not just a basic sequel; its quality places it on par with classic Zelda games, earning it a spot among them in the adult gaming world.
2. Super Mario Party Jamboree
It’s party time
It’s terrific news that Mario Party has returned! There’s an enjoyable charm to spending a cozy evening playing games with someone dear, that is, until you snatch their star in the final round!
The “Super Mario Party Celebration” improves upon the flaws of “Super Mario Party” and, in light of the triumph of “Mario Party Superstars,” merges traditional mini-games and game boards from yesteryears with a fresh array of novel activities.
The real win here is that we can change the rules for each game to our heart’s desire. It allows for an impressive, albeit somewhat shallow, customization to play the game as we see fit—no more random mini-games. We can finally vote on them!
If Super Mario Party Jamboree signals where the Mario Party series is moving towards, I’d love to join in on the fun. As it turns out, this could very well be my top Nintendo game for the year, but let’s discuss another remaster of a cherished title before we make any decisions.
1. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Finally
Twenty years have passed since the initial release of “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” on the Nintendo GameCube, and now it’s returned with an improved version that surpasses its original brilliance.
It was a letdown not to receive a substantial amount of fresh content similar to the quality found in games like “Luigi’s Mansion 2” or the revamped version of “Metroid Prime.” However, it doesn’t really matter since “Thousand-Year Door” is such an exceptional game.
The improvements made to the quality of life within the game significantly enhance its appeal, making it a more pleasurable and contemporary experience. These updates effectively address many of the original game’s primary issues and drawbacks. Despite this modernization, it retains the same charm and aesthetic appeal as before, and surprisingly, the combat remains engaging.
This game is essential for any Nintendo Switch library. If you were captivated by its original release two decades ago, or if you simply didn’t get around to playing it then, I strongly recommend you give it a try now.
