To qualify for this part, they needed to possess charisma, a suave demeanor, physical fitness, British or Commonwealth origin, the right age, and exceptional acting skills. Typically, those chosen had an alluring charm and were in their 30s or early 40s with impressive acting abilities. Notably, Barbara Broccoli, the producer of James Bond, has expressed two essential prerequisites for the next lead, and it’s clear that these conditions have been consistent throughout.

A Wall Street Journal report revealed Broccoli’s stance on James Bond character portrayal. As the guardian of the franchise alongside her half-brother Michael G. Wilson, Broccoli is firm that James Bond remains a male British character. In discussions with friends, she has expressed no issues with casting actors of diverse ethnicities or sexual orientations, but insists that the role should always be portrayed by a man and a Briton.

It’s not unusual that these requirements were set, as all past James Bond actors shared similar qualities – they were male and either British or had ties to countries with Commonwealth background. Connery hailed from Scotland, Moore, Niven, and Craig are English, Dalton is Welsh, Brosnan is Irish. Lazenby, on the other hand, is Australian, a member of the Commonwealth’s founding nations.
