As a long-time fan of both DC Universe and James Gunn’s work, I must say that his emotional discussion about Weasel from Creature Commandos truly resonated with me. Having experienced prejudice and misunderstanding myself, I could empathize with this innocent character who was wrongly accused due to his appearance.
In a heartfelt moment, James Gunn shared insights into one character from the DC Universe, confessing that he had penned a storyline involving an innocent character during an episode of ‘Creature Commandos’.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my debut venture in the DC Universe comes in the form of “Creature Commandos,” a role I’ve taken on as co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios. In this exciting journey, I penned the script and contributed significantly to the series’ direction. This animated masterpiece offers a unique blend of terror, laughter, and pulse-pounding action. In a heartfelt interview, I confessed that among all the scripts I’ve ever written, the one that tugged at my heartstrings the most is indeed part of this extraordinary series.
In a recent interview, Gunn talked about one of the characters featured in Creature Commandos, Weasel, a humanoid anthropomorphic. He has a bizarre appearance with sharp claws, matted fur, and a wiry frame, giving him a comical look. He appears creepy and goofy. However, he was put in jail for allegedly killing 27 kids. Gunn stood up for him and showed why Weasel was innocent by exposing the actual events that occurred before his arrest in Creature Commandos Season 1, episode 4, “Chasing Squirrels.” When he wrote about the episode, the filmmaker got candid about how he felt for the character. “I get really sad talking about it,” Gunn shared, sounding emotional, per Variety. “I remember finishing [writing] it. I was in Colorado with my wife, and I remember I said, ‘I think I just wrote the saddest thing that I’ve ever written in my entire life.'”
In the movie Suicide Squad (2021), Weasel was presented by Gunn as a character. In an animated series, a friendly beast named Weasel emerges from the woods and interacts with a group of children who are captivated by his kind demeanor. However, an elderly man perceives Weasel as dangerous and summons help by calling 911 and grabbing a shotgun. The children and Weasel find themselves in the school’s boiler room where a tragic accident occurs – they strike a box of matches next to a box of dirty rags, causing an explosion. The old man and other kids die, except for one girl and Weasel. Weasel tries to save the girl but is mistakenly seen carrying her lifeless body by two officers who arrive at the scene. With the bodies of the other children surrounding them, Weasel attempts to protect the girl, but the officers suspect him due to his appearance. Director Gunn concludes that despite being perceived as menacing due to his differences, Weasel is ultimately the most noble character in the series, as he is an innocent creature unfairly judged by others based on his appearance.
If you understand the director’s comments about Superman, it helps if you’ve watched the episode that delves into Weasel’s past. But even without seeing it, the story presented here about Weasel’s incarceration is heart-wrenching. Gunn accurately labeled Weasel as a memorable character because after watching this particular episode, one would never forget him. Weasel went to great lengths to help the only survivor despite being continually shot at by the police. In the end, they left the girl helpless and allowed her to perish in the fire while taking Weasel away. Weasel was the only one who showed concern for the child, but his efforts to save her were overlooked due to prejudice against his appearance. To add insult to injury, Weasel couldn’t defend himself because he couldn’t speak, and his actions were misconstrued against him. Watching Weasel’s episode is enough to bring tears to one’s eyes, as Gunn’s sadness resonates throughout it.
