James Gunn Gives Disappointing Update About DCU’s The Flash

Summary

  • James Gunn and Peter Safran are revamping the DCEU but have no immediate plans for The Flash on the big screen.
  • Despite plans for Barry Allen in the DCU, no script for The Flash film is greenlit yet.
  • Previous controversies and a lack of prioritization contributed to the delayed return of The Flash to the DCU.

As a movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest update on The Flash in the DC Universe has left me feeling like I’ve run into a brick wall at full speed – and that’s saying something!

James Gunn recently shared insights regarding the prospective path of The Flash within the DC Universe. At this moment, it seems there’s no imminent strategy in place to reintroduce the Crimson Comet on the silver screen.

In one of the most widely recognized superhero roles within DC Comics, The Flash is a prominent figure. When Gunn and Peter Safran assumed their positions as co-chairman and co-CEO at DC Studios, they opted for a fresh start with the series and films stemming from the DCEU. With speculation swirling about their intentions for The Flash following its underwhelming box office performance in the last movie featuring Ezra Miller, Gunn has expressed his ideas regarding the character’s future. It seems that they have strategies for Barry Allen within the DC Universe, but there’s no immediate urgency to introduce him to the storyline.

In their revamped DC Universe, Gunn and Safran are indeed planning to introduce The Fastest Man Alive. James Gunn clarified this during a social media exchange about the upcoming DCU film. At the moment, they don’t have a script finalized for it, so it hasn’t been officially given the go-ahead yet, as it hasn’t been “greenlit.” A fan questioned why Clayface was chosen instead of more popular characters like The Flash or Wonder Woman. Gunn responded by stating that no movie will be produced before the script is complete, and since Flanagan’s script for Clayface was ready, it will premiere on September 11, 2026. As for The Flash, development is currently being held back.

As a movie critic, I was hardly shocked by Gunn’s recent announcement regarding another solo Flash film in the DC Universe. Given the disappointing performance of the last movie, which ranked among Warner Bros.’ biggest flops, it seemed plausible they wouldn’t invest in another one for quite some time. Some fans even speculated that The Flash might make an appearance but wouldn’t star in a solo film.

It seems unlikely that fans will get another appearance of The Flash soon, as Gunn has been careful not to discuss any projects directly linked to it. This delay might be due to Gunn and Safran focusing on other projects like “Superman: Legacy”, “The Authority”, TV series such as “Creature Commandos”, and not prioritizing The Flash at the moment. Another possible reason could be the underperformance of the last movie, which was affected by controversies surrounding its lead actor, Miller. These issues led to calls for cancellation and boycotts, which may have impacted the film’s performance.

The Flash streams on Netflix.
