One Piece: Why Shanks’s Might Have A Sister, Explained

As a long-time fan of One Piece, I must say that the latest theories about Shanks having a sister are as intriguing as they are exciting! With my years of reading this incredible manga, I’ve come to appreciate the depth and complexity of the characters, and this potential new addition to the Figarland family would certainly not disappoint.

This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.

Summary

  • Shanks possibly having a sister adds depth to the story.
  • Garling had children, one being Shanks’s twin.
  • Shanks’s sister could be a powerful villain in the Elbaf Arc.

The 1134th installment of “One Piece” was truly immense, filled with numerous thrilling advancements within the narrative. Although this chapter brimmed with intriguing elements, such as the Owl’s Library and additional details about Prince Loki, the most captivating moment occurred at the closing scene. A bolt of black lightning struck a castle in Western Elbaf Village, causing two enigmatic figures cloaked in mystery to appear from within it.

This was an extremely exciting part of the chapter, and one that blew away the minds of many fans. While one of these characters was revealed to be Shanks’s twin brother, the other character’s identity still remains unclear. This character could easily be Shanks’s sister.

Why Shanks Might Have A Sister

  • Shanks Having A Big Family Is Possible
  • Garling Had A Few Children

It can be reasonably assumed that the identity of the bandaged character remains a mystery to fans at present, as Oda has yet to disclose the answer. Fans have proposed various theories, such as the possibility that this character could be Kuina or a member of the Vinsmoke Family, but these ideas lack substantial evidence. However, fans are encouraged to speculate as long as their theories have a solid foundation.

Regarding the manga, we’ve now reached Elbaf! It’s a peaceful kingdom, but that peace is soon to be disrupted by the arrival of a certain individual! Simultaneously, other seas will experience turmoil too! Lastly, expect that one character to start causing global upheaval! – Oda (Paraphrased)

Currently, there isn’t much information about the other character, but she’s often seen with Shanks’s brother, which might suggest they are siblings. Since they travel together in pairs and originated from the same summoning circle, it seems plausible that they follow their father’s commands, Saint Garling Figarland. Given that only a few individuals can wield the power of the summoning circle, other than the Five Elders, and Saint Garling is one of them now, fans speculate that this person could indeed be Shanks’s sister.

Garling Has More Than Just One Child

Garling Confirmed He Had Children On God Valley

In the climactic chapter of One Piece, fans were acquainted with St Garling Figarland. He was unveiled as an elderly figure, famously recognized as the Champion of God Valley. Subsequently, during Kuma’s flashback, viewers gained a glimpse into a portion of the God Valley Incident. Saint Garling was portrayed as being remarkably similar to Shanks, with the only discernible differences being his attire and a distinctive crescent moon-shaped hairstyle. This character was involved in the Native Hunting Games on the island, where he seemed to be dominating the competition. It’s suggested that he brought his family along with him, indicating his leading position in this contest.

Watch closely, children! – Saint Garling Figarland

It’s evident that Garling requested his children to closely watch him during battle, though we don’t know exactly how many kids he has. However, it can be assumed with certainty that there are at least two: one of them is Shanks, and this is well-known among fans. The other child appears to be Shanks’s twin, a fact that was initially revealed in One Piece chapter 907 and reemerged in the story in chapter 1134. There could potentially be another sibling of Shanks as well, who might be his sister or the individual accompanying Shanks’s twin to Elbaf.

An additional point to consider is Garling’s statement about his children watching him closely. This event, the Native Hunting Games, happened 38 years ago. At that time, Shanks would have been less than a year old, still an infant. Since he was an infant, he wouldn’t have understood anything said to him and probably couldn’t even watch the games. In fact, it raises doubts about whether Shanks was actually near the battlefield at all. Given his young age and inability to stand, it’s more likely that Shanks was somewhere else, under the supervision of a caregiver.

After this statement by Garling, it makes you ponder who exactly he was addressing when speaking to his children, given that Shanks is not the only child. If we exclude Shanks from consideration, then there must be at least one more sibling besides Shanks’s twin. This other sibling could possibly be Shanks’s sister, hinted in One Piece chapter 1134. There isn’t much evidence to support this theory, but it certainly adds an interesting twist to the story.

How Would Shanks Having A Sister Affect The Plot?

The Figarland Family Would Grow Even More Interesting

Having a sister for Shanks could significantly amplify the intrigue in Elbaf. At minimum, it would introduce two formidable antagonists for this story arc. Fans are already familiar with Garling’s immense power, a fact emphasized by Oda within the narrative. Given that Shanks is also a powerful figure, his sister would undoubtedly be extremely strong as well. If she turns out to be related to Saint Garling, she could become one of the strongest female characters in One Piece. Additionally, this revelation would enrich the Figarland family’s dynamics. While Shanks is conscious of his lineage, the nature of his connection to the Figarland clan remains unclear.

Although Garling seems malevolent, it’s unclear what role this possible sister may play. Oda has numerous opportunities to explore this concept creatively, and it’s undeniably intriguing. However, it’s also important to consider that she could be any other Celestial Dragon, as eight of their families are yet to be revealed to fans. It would also be strategic for Oda to make her a representative of the unseen Celestial Dragon families, as this would certainly increase the complexity and richness of the narrative.
