As a longtime gaming enthusiast who has traversed through countless virtual worlds and experienced the birth of numerous legendary franchises, I must say that this list is nothing short of a journey down memory lane. From remakes of iconic classics to fresh takes on influential games, each entry here holds a special place in the hearts of gamers everywhere.
For quite a while now, video games have been a platform for creating countless iconic titles and series. However, given that some of these games are rather ancient, there may be players who haven’t had the chance to play them yet. Additionally, due to their age, certain elements in these games might seem outdated when compared to today’s standards, especially in terms of graphics.
Revamping a game refers to updating an older video game for today’s audience and gaming environment. This could be for appealing to the current market or simply refreshing the game itself. In terms of genres, first-person shooters have consistently been well-received, with some titles dating back several decades. However, when these games are remade, they can elicit varied responses – positive or negative – but ultimately, they bring a fresh feel to the series.
5. Counter-Strike: Source
A Game With A Time Length Dependent On The Player
Over the years, the Counter-Strike franchise has had some unusual spin-offs, such as Counter-Strike Nexon and Counter-Strike NEO. Notably, Counter-Strike: Source was Valve’s endeavor to reimagine the initial Counter-Strike, though it’s now commonly viewed as a separate game in its own right. This is understandable since they took more than two decades to release a true sequel to the original.
As a gamer, I can say that for me, Counter-Strike Source never really ends. Being a competitive multiplayer game, there’s no definitive conclusion to the experience. I can play it for a few hours, or I could clock up thousands of hours if I want. Some might argue its ‘life’ ended in 2012 when Counter-Strike: Global Offensive took over as the latest installment in the series, but the fact remains that I (and many others) can still jump back into CS: Source anytime I like, because it doesn’t have a clear ending.
4. Rise Of The Triad (2013)
7 Hours And 30 Minutes
Platform | PC |
Released | 2013-07-31 |
Developer | Interceptor Entertainment |
Genre | First-person Shooter |
Since its debut in 1995, the game “Rise of the Triad” has seen several variations. More recently, a remastered version called “Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition” was launched. In contrast, the game simply named “Rise of the Triad” from 2013 was essentially a re-creation of the original game, striving to emulate the gameplay experience of its 1995 counterpart.
The typical playthrough of this game lasts about seven hours, but with extra content included, it could stretch up to eleven hours. If you’re a thorough gamer, expect to invest around thirty-eight hours to fully complete the game.
3. GoldenEye 007 (2010)
7 Hours And 30 Minutes
The James Bond series boasts numerous video game adaptations, dating back several decades. Out of these, the 1997 title, GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, stands as an iconic and cherished game. Given its enduring popularity and legendary status, it’s not surprising that talk of a remake has circulated over time.
In the year 2010, a revamped version of “GoldenEye 007” hit the market, keeping the same title. This updated edition was designed for both Wii and Nintendo DS systems. Compared to its predecessor, this reboot features Daniel Craig as James Bond instead of Pierce Brosnan. However, it retains the interactive playability across the movie’s scenes. Players have a variety of weapons at their disposal to advance through the game. On average, it takes about seven hours to finish the main storyline, but if you delve into additional content, it could stretch up to sixteen hours.
2. Black Mesa
15 Hours
Amongst gaming companies, Valve Corporation is undeniably legendary, thriving on iconic games that have proven their longevity. Out of all the series they’ve crafted, the one that has garnered the most recognition is none other than Half-Life. This game, being exceptionally influential, has left an indelible mark on gaming history. Given this legacy, it comes as no surprise that a remake of this classic title would eventually surface.
Known for being named after the location where it unfolds, Black Mesa serves as a remastered version of the original Half-Life. Striking graphics are undeniably one of its standout aspects. This game is an incredibly accurate recreation of the first Half-Life, transporting the original settings, adversaries, and weaponry into a contemporary reinterpretation that honors the legacy left by the initial game. With a runtime of roughly fifteen hours when focusing on the main narrative, and approximately eighteen hours with the inclusion of additional content, Black Mesa offers an engaging experience. While its length may be due to being a remake of a 1998 title, this doesn’t detract from its value. Fans of the original or those new to the Half-Life series are strongly encouraged to explore Black Mesa.
1. System Shock (2023)
16 Hours
1990s saw several games rise to legendary status and exert significant influence on the gaming industry, with “System Shock” being one of them. Launched in 1994, it’s frequently mentioned as a must-play game among the greatest of all time.
Back in 1994, I fell in love with an iconic game that left a lasting impression on me. Fast forward to 2023, and guess what? They’ve brought it back, better than ever! The remake was a no-brainer, given the original’s popularity. It managed to preserve the essence that made it so beloved while modernizing it for today’s gaming landscape.
