Summary
- PS5 version of Black Myth: Wukong doesn’t reach 60 fps despite PS5 Pro patch.
- Quality Mode trades high resolution for improved graphics settings.
- PS5 Pro feature PSSR enables outputs at higher resolution.
As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of gaming from the days of 8-bit graphics to the breathtaking visuals of today, I must say that Black Myth: Wukong left me both awestruck and disappointed. The game’s stunning artwork and captivating narrative were undeniably top-notch, but its technical performance on the PS5 was a bit of a letdown.
2024 saw Black Myth: Wukong as one of my top-tier gaming experiences, garnering multiple awards and a spot on the Game of the Year nominations. Yet, confined to PC and PlayStation 5, it was a joy that I could only fully immerse myself in on these platforms. However, when Game Science finally brought it to consoles, it didn’t live up to my expectations, leaving many fellow fans underwhelmed. Regrettably, the recent PS5 Pro patch doesn’t seem like it will address our concerns.
As reported by Eurogamer, the initial PlayStation 5 release of the game maintains a steady 30 frames per second (fps) with additional frame generation. After the recent update, this hasn’t seemed to change, regardless of whether the Performance mode is being used on the console.
Indeed, this particular mode didn’t receive any significant visual enhancements, aside from the addition of a new sharpening feature and slightly intensified ambient occlusion.
As a gamer, I’ve set my Quality mode to run at a steady 30 frames per second, skipping any generated frames. However, in an unexpected move, the internal resolution and upscaling (output) resolution appear to have been reduced. On the brighter side, aspects like shadow quality and draw distance have seen improvements.
At last, I’ve found that the Balance mode is just right, perfectly balanced between performance and visuals. Compared to Quality mode, it eases off some of its high-definition settings to maintain a steady 45 frames per second (fps). What sets this mode apart is its compatibility with 120Hz screens. As a gamer, I appreciate the smooth gameplay it offers.
Black Myth: Wukong Patch 1.0.13.16615 adds PSSR

The patch notes reveal thatBlack Myth: Wukong now supports PSSR, joining Silent Hill 2 and Alan Wake 2. The notes also introduce the new 120 Hz output in Balanced mode, improved individual scenes, and unspecified enhancements.
One distinctive aspect of the PS5 Pro model is the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, often abbreviated as PSSR. This AI-powered real-time upgrade enhances the console’s capability to display a higher resolution than the game itself generates internally.
The Sony console might struggle to maintain a smooth frame rate when rendering Black Myth: Wukong in 4K resolution, but it can downscale the image and upscale it on-the-fly without causing blurriness. However, while this approach generally works well, there may still be occasional imperfections.
It’s uncertain if this update marks the final enhancement for Game Science’s first release on Sony’s console for their debut title. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Black Myth: Wukong isn’t finished being discussed; there may even be a version for Xbox under development.
