Massive Halo Leak Reveals Dev Builds, Unreleased Content and More Spanning 26 Years

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, this Halo leak feels like unearthing a forgotten treasure from the annals of video game history. The tantalizing glimpse into the early days of Bungie’s groundbreaking franchise is akin to stumbling upon an archaeological dig site, brimming with artifacts that have long been lost to time.

An extensive release of Halo data, which includes development resources, unpublished materials, and pre-release versions, has been illegally distributed on the internet.

The content can be traced as far back as 1998 at Bungie, a time when the developers had recently launched Myth II: Soulblighter and were engrossed in developing Oni and Halo: Combat Evolved.

Initially disclosed by VISCERAL, the data breach is estimated to contain approximately 90GB of information and is believed to have occurred due to 343 Industries bringing in a team of modders with the intention of recovering deleted content and data from previous games, referred to as the Digsite project. This project was well-known among some users, including a modder who had contributed to it, who affirmed that the leak was authentic.

Today, the Halo franchise is under the care of Halo Studios, formerly known as 343 Industries, which changed its name in 2024. This studio is currently working on the next installments of the Halo series. In tandem with this name change, they also revealed that their games will be transitioning to Unreal Engine 5.

Essentially, Pierre Hintze, the studio head, explained that if you examine Halo closely, it has essentially gone through two distinct phases: Phase 1 was under Bungie and Phase 2 by 343 Industries. Given the audience’s eagerness for more content, we aren’t merely aiming to enhance development efficiency but to fundamentally alter the approach we take when creating Halo games.
