Summary
- Sony CEO admitted their Spider-Man universe films were poorly received and are being reevaluated.
- Critic reviews and audience reception have prompted Sony to rethink its strategy.
- CEO Vinciquerra suggests the media is to blame for harsh criticism of their films.
As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinema-going experience under my belt, I find it rather fascinating to observe the latest developments in Sony’s Spider-Man universe. The outgoing CEO Tony Vinciquerra’s remarks about the criticism leveled against their films are quite intriguing, to say the least.
Before Tony Vinciquerra steps down as Sony’s studio head, he shares some thoughts, and one of the key points he emphasizes is his surprise at the less-than-ideal outcome of their strategy in the Spider-Man universe.
Sony’s strategy has primarily revolved around exploring characters associated with Spider-Man in the Marvel comics universe, with a strong emphasis on villains. Venom was their initial attempt, which initially seemed promising due to its reception. However, even though Venom: Let There Be Carnage was well-received to some extent, it failed to achieve significant financial or critical success. This didn’t deter Sony from proceeding with more films set in this particular comic world. Unfortunately, movies like Morbius, Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and Kraven The Hunter all underperformed both financially and critically.
Sony Blames The Media For Spider-Man Universe Struggles
The Spiderverse films from Sony haven’t been well-received, leading to speculation that the company may adjust its approach. In a conversation with the Los Angeles Times, outgoing CEO Tony Vinciquerra hinted at a strategic reevaluation due to the challenges faced by the spin-off Spider-Man franchise. However, he didn’t directly attribute this change to the quality of the movies; instead, he suggested that both critics and audiences have been overly critical of the films released thus far.
Vinciquerra expressed his belief that we should reconsider our approach, not because it’s been unsuccessful, but because any new attempt is likely to be met with destruction. He clarified that he felt the media was more of an issue than the quality of movies such as Kraven the Hunter.
It appears that the media chose not to support the production of movies featuring Kraven [the Hunter] and Madame Web, and these films received harsh criticism from critics as a result. He then suggested that the critics have had a grudge against the Sony Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception. He also pointed out that they did the same with Venom, but the audience adored Venom, which turned Venom into a box office success. However, these films are not inherently bad; they were simply panned by critics in the media for unknown reasons.
It’s not unfounded that Sony’s CEO holds this viewpoint. The initial Venom movie garnered an impressive 80% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, in stark contrast to its 30% score among critics. Yet, none of the subsequent films have managed to achieve the same level of box office success as the original one did.
Another perspective suggests that although audience ratings for “Kraven the Hunter” (71%) are significantly higher compared to critic ratings (16%), these scores can be more easily influenced by online campaigns. There have been instances where movies received negative reviews not because of their quality, but due to review bombing. However, it’s evident that Vinciquerra does not attribute the issues with Sony’s “Spider-Man” franchise as the primary cause of the situation.
