As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that “Dune: Prophecy” has certainly lived up to its hype. The first season has been an exhilarating ride, filled with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.
Prophecy aired its finale on December 22, 2024. It resolved some storylines and set up many more for the next season. The series saw significant character deaths and power shifts among the main groups that may have significant future consequences. Although it provided answers to some questions, it also generated new ones, leaving viewers curious about what’s to come in season two.
The Imperium
In the climax of Dune: Prophecy, there was a lot to resolve, and HBO expanded its running time to fit it all in. The Imperium had been growing increasingly chaotic throughout the series. The impotent Emperor Corrino dismissed his longtime advisor Valya Harkonnen, leaving power to Desmond Hart and his fanatical wife Empress Natalya (Jodhi May). The entrance of Sister Francesca (Tabu), once Emperor Corrino’s mistress and mother of his son Constantine (Josh Heuston), further complicated an already precarious situation.
In the final act, Valya journeys to the imperial world Salusa Secundus following word about Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sophie Boussnina), a Truthsayer in training whom the Sisterhood have secretly been working to place on the throne. Arrested for attempting to rescue her lover, Keiran Atreides, from prison after his rebellion against the Empire was uncovered, Ynez now finds herself imprisoned. Rather than returning to Corrino’s favor, Valya deliberately sets out to be detained herself, openly criticizing him as weak and revealing that his entire reign had been orchestrated by the Sisterhood.
The strategy proves successful, leading to Valya’s transportation to a prison. Inside, she employs her unique ability to overpower the guards and release Ynez. However reluctant, Valya also liberates Keiran at Ynez’s request. Sister Theodosia (portrayed by Jade Anouka) employs her extraordinary powers of transformation, creating a distraction that allows the trio to flee the planet before their deception is exposed.
In a twist of events, Francesca’s initial strategy to charm and manipulate Corrino has evolved into a plot for cold-blooded murder. Valya equips her with the deadly ‘gom jabbar’. In a tense encounter, Corrino doubts whether Francesca’s affection for him was genuine, and she attempts to convince him that it was Valya’s idea, not hers. However, Corrino takes matters into his own hands by stabbing himself, leaving the ‘gom jabbar’ to fall upon Francesca as Natalya surprises them from behind and stabs her with it. The two tragically lose their lives in each other’s embrace.
The Sisterhood
Meanwhile, on Salusa Secundus, events are unfolding, while back at their headquarters, Wallach IX, Sister Lila (Chloe Lea), now under the influence of the spirit of Reverend Mother Dorotea, takes advantage of the situation to reveal the truth about her death that occurred 30 years ago.
Initially, it was believed that Valya took her own life due to sorrow following Mother Superior Raquella’s demise. However, a flashback unveils a different story. Not only did Valya employ “the voice” to murder Raquella, but Tula, Francesca, and Kasha were involved in the act. They concealed the truth and made the other sisters either submit to Valya’s rule or face death. By using Lila as a medium, Dorotea stirs unrest within the Sisterhood by exposing their criminal actions.
It’s an ideal moment for Tula to step down from her position and make contact with Desmond Hart. A flashback unveils that Desmond was actually the son of Tula and her Atreides lover Orry, whom she chose to give away rather than expose him to Valya’s potential long-term schemes. She entrusted Francesca to exchange the baby with a stillborn child, hoping that being raised apart from them would grant him the opportunity to carve his own path in life.
Tula is eager to find a solution to assist Desmond, as she learns that the lethal virus he utilized against Kasha and others is, surprisingly, a form of advanced nanotechnology integrated into thinking machines. Tula believes that Desmond has unwittingly become a pawn in the hands of malevolent forces. She also yearns to reach out to her long-lost son, hoping that their reunion could lead to a cure for him and ultimately eliminate the virus permanently.
Desmond Hart
The action returns to Salusa Secundus, where this season’s second encounter takes place between Valya and Desmond. After Theodosia, disguised as someone else, stabbed him in the abdomen earlier, Desmond pursues Valya, Ynez, and Keiran to prevent their flight. Stricken by the fear virus, Valya retreats into her own consciousness to avoid being overwhelmed. Tula joins the fray, trying to assist Valya in combating the virus by serving as a conduit for the fear, mirroring the Litany Against Fear that becomes more significant later in Dune.
In the aftermath, Valya endures the harrowing event and experiences a memory from Desmond’s standpoint, where an enigmatic character employs advanced technology to embed a weapon into Desmond’s eye. Trying to remove the damaged eye, Valya is prevented by Tula, who discloses that Desmond is her child and has been victimized by their real adversary – whoever this foe may be. Overwhelmed, Valya escapes with Ynez and Keiran in tow, while Tula tenderly holds her injured son, but he orders his guards to apprehend her instead.
Valya, Ynez, and Keiran were recently spotted making their entrance onto Arrakis, as Valya declares that their quest to uncover their true adversary is now underway.
At the end of season one for “Dune: Prophecy,” each significant character finds themselves in different circumstances. The Corrino family is no more, Tula is now under Desmond’s protection, the Sisterhood is led by the revived Dorotea, and Valya continues her search for answers on Arrakis. Fans will have to tune into season two to see what happens next, but it appears that power dynamics have changed significantly – both in grand and subtle ways. For now, the Imperium stands without a ruler, and it’s questionable whether the Harkonnen sisters will receive a friendly reception from the Sisterhood once they return from their separate journeys.
