As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Sony’s decision to continue improving the PS Portal is music to my ears (or eyes, depending on how you look at it). A longer battery life would also be a welcome addition, allowing me to game on-the-go without worrying about running out of juice.

In the end, I can’t help but laugh at the thought of a potential successor to the PS Portal that could play PS5 games like the rumored new standalone handheld device. If it does eventually materialize, I suppose I’ll just have to add another gadget to my ever-growing collection of gaming devices!

On November 15 last year, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of the launch of the PS Portal. At first, this device was promoted as an accessory for the PS5, enabling users to stream their console games at home. However, by November 2024, Sony unveiled experimental capabilities that let gamers play games directly on the PS Portal from the cloud without needing a PS5.

It took some time for Sony to make the choice to incorporate this particular feature, but it had been a consideration for quite a while, as stated by Hiromi Wakai, SIE VP of Product Management in an interview with Game File. Essentially, Wakai shared that the cloud game streaming option has been on Sony’s plans since the initial stages of development. However, the final decision to implement it was also influenced by feedback received after the product launch from PS Portal users, a significant number of whom expressed their desire for cloud streaming support.

More PS Portal Features Are on the Way

Wakai clarified that Sony aimed to ensure an exceptional user experience from the get-go, which is why certain features like cloud gaming support were absent at the initial release. The representative from SIE expressed enthusiasm about maintaining this method and continually enhancing the PS Portal based on user input, hinting at additional post-launch features in the pipeline. It’s also expected that the cloud gaming support will be upgraded in the near future since it is currently still in beta and only compatible with 120 titles from the PS Plus Premium collection—a minimal portion of the overall PS5 game library.

Since the initial stages of developing our PS Portal, we’ve consistently planned to include cloud-based game streaming as an option.

Wakai’s announcement of upcoming enhancements for the PS Portal mirrors the statements made by PlayStation co-CEO Hideaki Nishino to the BBC in early December 2024, where he emphasized Sony’s commitment to further developing the PS Portal. Although Sony has not yet disclosed any official sales data, a report from market research firm Circana for September 2024 estimated that around 3% of U.S. PS5 owners have purchased the PS Portal. This figure implies that about 650,000 units were sold in the United States within its first ten months on the market. The newly integrated feature that allows game streaming without a PS5 is likely to make the PS Portal even more attractive to potential buyers.

As someone who has been a dedicated gamer since the days of the original PlayStation, I have to admit that the idea of a potential successor to the PS5 is both intriguing and slightly concerning.
