- Jenova and Necron have unclear origins and deep mysteries surrounding their existence.
As a longtime fan of the Final Fantasy series who has spent countless hours exploring its rich and intricate worlds, I must say that the enigmatic characters and stories it presents are one of its most appealing aspects. Among these mysterious figures, none have left me as bewildered and intrigued as those on this list, each with their own unique backstories and roles in the game’s lore.
Jenova, the alien life-form with a penchant for destruction, is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating characters in Final Fantasy 7. With her origins unknown and purpose shrouded in mystery, she has left me questioning the nature of existence itself. I can’t help but wonder if Jenova is simply a malevolent force or if there is more to her story that remains hidden.
Another character that leaves me perplexed is Padra Nsu-Yeul from Final Fantasy 13-2. Her ability to reincarnate and alter her personality with each rebirth is truly mind-boggling, leaving me questioning the nature of identity and consciousness. I find myself asking, “If Yeul can be reborn multiple times, what makes this version of her any different from the others?”
The case of Siegfried/Ziegfried in Final Fantasy 6 also leaves me scratching my head. The sudden change in his name and abilities during gameplay has left many fans, myself included, wondering if we were even fighting the same character. I can’t help but joke that maybe it was just a simple case of “mistaken identity” or perhaps they were twins separated at birth!
Finally, let us not forget the curious case of Ozma from Final Fantasy 9. A large sphere with swirling patterns resembling a gas giant planet, its connection to the world of Terra and its status as an eidolon have left me questioning the nature of reality within the game’s universe.
In conclusion, these enigmatic characters are just one of the many reasons that make the Final Fantasy series so captivating. Each one leaves us with more questions than answers, fueling our imagination and keeping us engaged long after we have finished playing the games. I can only hope that the creators continue to weave such intricate and thought-provoking stories in future installments of this beloved franchise.
The “Final Fantasy” franchise has held fans spellbound since 1987, with main storylines now reaching beyond ten games. Given the numerous titles released over the years, coupled with the multitude of spin-offs and collaborations, it’s accurate to say that the series boasts a sizable cast of characters.
In many instances, you’ll find that characters might not have a fully developed history or clear motivations due to the sheer number involved. At times, such as with these enigmatic Non-Player Characters (NPCs), the writers intentionally keep details about their past and reasons for actions ambiguous, thereby adding an element of mystery and intrigue to the character.
10. Enuo – Final Fantasy 5
Enuo Controls The Power Of The Void
Initially meant to play a significant part, the character named Enuo is merely mentioned in the initial release of Final Fantasy 5. He is a potent sorcerer who bartered his immortality for the ability to harness the power of the Void. In the Game Boy Advance version of the game, he is a hidden tough opponent, also known as a secret superboss.
A significant portion of Enuo’s past remains shrouded in mystery within the game, as the books detailing his life are disputed and scattered across various dimensions. However, 1,000 years before the game’s events, Enuo’s power was so immense that when he was vanquished, the world split apart, confining him to the Void.
9. Cloud Of Darkness – Final Fantasy 3
Mystical Main Antagonist
Although Cloud of Darkness seems like a female humanoid character, it’s essential to note that this entity is neither gender-specific nor human. It serves as the primary antagonist in Final Fantasy 3, but its introduction occurs late in the game, and its origins remain largely unexplained. The main thing we know about Cloud of Darkness is its ambition to transform everything into nothingness.
Similar to certain other characters on this list, Cloud of Darkness is playable in several spin-off games, primarily in the Dissidia series. However, little information about it is revealed through its in-game appearances. It appears to be indestructible, as defeating it does not seem to eliminate it; instead, it enters a dormant state to regain strength and come back even stronger.
8. Girl Who Forgot Her Name – World Of Final Fantasy
She Seriously Does Not Remember Her Name
Upon stepping into the enchanting Girl’s Tea Room, nestled within a pocket dimension, gamers will encounter an unusual figure – the “Girl Who Can’t Remember Her Own Name.” Hailing from the realm of Final Fantasy, this character bears a striking resemblance to a time-manipulating character from the Japanese game Sigma Harmonics, which was only released in Japan. Known as the Time Guardian, she plays a significant role within the game’s narrative.
Many gamers have passionately discussed her origins and attempted to decipher every subtle clue found in the Tearoom, with some going so far as to propose that various Square Enix game series might be set within the same universe or multiverse. However, the cutscenes and dialogue offer little definitive information, leaving her a fascinating enigma for Final Fantasy enthusiasts.
7. Minerva – Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7
Most Likely A Goddess
In the spin-off game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, the background and true identity of Minerva are somewhat vague. Some players believe she’s the deity referenced in the poem “LOVELESS” by the primary villain, Genesis Rhapsodos. There are indeed numerous hints pointing towards her being a Goddess.
She’s suggested to be connected to the sentient planet character Gaia, the setting for the various Final Fantasy 7 games. She briefly appears towards the end of the game, offering a challenging fight as a superboss. After being defeated, she vanishes mysteriously without any clear explanation.
6. Necron – Final Fantasy 9
Death Itself
An enigmatic and extraterrestrial entity named Necron strives to eliminate all existence, viewing its actions as benevolent. Contrary to the ominous nature of this objective, Necron considers itself neutral, holding the belief that all life naturally seeks extinction and will persist as long as life remains.
In the role of the final antagonist in Final Fantasy 9, Necron reacts disbelief upon being vanquished, and is particularly taken aback by humanity’s resilience. The enigmatic figure of Necron, with its cryptic origins, has left numerous players bewildered, as there is scarcely any detail provided regarding its past, save for its symbolism of death and existential despair.
5. Yu Yevon – Final Fantasy 10
Indistinguishable From Sin
In the game Final Fantasy 10, a character known as Yu Yevon, who is never heard speaking or depicted in human form, serves as the final boss. Throughout the game, there are hints about him, but it’s evident that he was once the ruler of Zanarkand before its destruction, and despite his power, he was unable to prevent its downfall.
It appears that his original physical self is no longer present, transforming into a peculiar floating entity. This transformation could have been deliberate, serving to control additional Aeons. Similar to other characters on this list, Yu Yevon had further plans designed for him, but these never came to fruition, leaving him a mysterious and enigmatic figure.
4. Ozma – Final Fantasy 9
A Giant Sphere Monster
A huge sphere displaying whirling designs reminiscent of a gas giant planet, Ozma is an intriguing and challenging boss encountered in Chocobo’s Air Garden within Final Fantasy 9. It boasts two distinct parts, with one half noticeably lighter than the other, giving off the impression of contrasting light and dark forces.
Mene refers to Ozma as something not originating from our world, residing within an “eidolon cave.” This description implies that Ozma could be an eidolon itself. Additionally, when defeated, Ozma releases a Pumice, which hints at a possible link between Ozma and Terra, another planet.
3. Siegfried/Ziegfried – Final Fantasy 6
An Impostor?
Among the captivating bosses found in Final Fantasy 6, Siegfried stands out as one of the most intriguing yet puzzling characters. Encountered for the first time aboard the Phantom Train during a quest for treasure, he presents little resistance initially. However, upon meeting again in Dragon’s Neck Coliseum, his name mysteriously changes to Ziegfried, and defeating him becomes significantly more difficult.
It appears Ziegfried alleges that someone has been posing as him, possibly accounting for the discrepancies; nevertheless, the whole scenario remains quite puzzling. Regrettably, it’s uncertain if additional developments were intended to expand upon this subplot, and many fans have spent years questioning these peculiar interactions.
2. Padra Nsu-Yeul – Final Fantasy 13-2
Many Yeuls
As a longtime fan of the Final Fantasy series, I have to admit that Paddra Nsu-Yeul from Final Fantasy 13 is one of the most fascinating characters I’ve encountered. With my years of gaming experience under my belt, I can attest that her enigmatic nature and complex backstory make her stand out among other video game characters.
Being a seeress with the power to see glimpses into the future at the cost of her own life, Yeul’s tale is one of sacrifice and rebirth. The fact that she seemingly dies and reappears multiple times in different forms only adds to the intrigue surrounding her character.
In my opinion, the developers did an excellent job in creating a character that keeps players engaged and leaves them questioning what will happen next. It’s always exciting to see how each reincarnation of Yeul unfolds, and it makes me eager to explore more about her in the sequels.
The character’s age varies between 14 and 17 years old, and her personality undergoes slight changes upon each reincarnation, yet she remains accepting of her grim destiny. Certain Yeuls in the Realm Beyond can be quite aggressive, leaving players with numerous questions about these prophets.
1. Jenova – Final Fantasy 7
An Alien And The “Mother” Of Sephiroth?
A somewhat disconcerting entity, named Jenova, hails from another world and has undergone numerous scientific procedures, resulting in some of the most formidable foes found in Final Fantasy 7, with Sephiroth being one of the most notable examples. As she traverses from planet to planet, she contaminates living organisms using her cells, causing them to decay from within until there is no life left and she can proceed to her next destination.
Jenova’s background remains a mystery, as well as her intentions. She appears to exist solely for the purpose of annihilating life, transforming infected organisms into vicious beasts and ultimately eradicating their existence. Beyond being enigmatic, Jenova is downright terrifying.
