As a long-time gamer who has been through several console generations, I can’t help but feel a sense of apprehension when it comes to the PlayStation 5 Pro. While I understand the allure of a more powerful gaming machine and the potential for enhanced graphics, my wallet is still recovering from the investment of the original PS5, which retails at $699. Furthermore, I have yet to see any concrete evidence that the new hardware will do justice to my favorite games. In the past, upgrading to a new console has often felt like a necessary step in keeping up with the times, but I can’t help but wonder if this time around, I might be better off waiting and seeing how the dust settles before making another expensive purchase.
Despite the reasonable concerns over some less-than-stellar PS5 upgrades for “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War”, it can remain reassured.
Thomas Morgan, from Digital Foundry, recently visited Infinity Ward’s Poland location and shared his experiences with Eurogamer.
During the journey, Morgan was given a personal demonstration of the tech behind Black Ops 6 that warranted its PS5 Pro upgrade, led by the game’s Lead Graphics Engineer, Michal Drobot, during the trip.
On the PS5 Pro, gamers enjoy a broader range of options compared to standard console gameplay. In compatible games, you’re able to select either the graphically enhanced mode running smoothly at 60 frames per second (FPS), or opt for the performance-focused setting that delivers 120 FPS.
In simpler terms, when compared to standard console game settings, the performance setting on the Pro version of a game offers visuals equivalent to the base PS5 running in high-quality mode.
Given the level of visual fidelity that many PS5 titles achieve, it is not a bad tradeoff.
The Devil is in the Details
Approximately a month back, Activision released an update for PS5 Pro-enhanced optimization on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Since the game was intended to run smoothly on this platform, there was naturally a slight delay since the console debuted before the game’s release.
The PS5 Pro’s visual improvements show themselves in the 60Hz mode.
Improving shadow quality in games can result in shadow resolution doubling or even quadrupling. Shadows, being one of the more discernible enhancements, can greatly elevate the visual experience; however, they are also notorious for consuming significant system resources, making them a challenge unless you have high-performance hardware.
As a devoted gamer, I’m thrilled about Black Ops 6’s innovative use of SSGI (Screen Space Global Illumination). This technology allows for the dynamic calculation of light reflections between various in-game surfaces, creating a stunning visual effect where characters appear to be bathed in light when standing near bright objects. It’s a feature that truly brings the game’s environments to life!
Combining high-quality Screen Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO) with SSGI yields lifelike lighting interplay, and it does so with fewer performance penalties compared to techniques such as Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen.
Activision also relied on enhanced screen-space reflections to minimize the appearance of light spillage along sharp edges.
Call of Duty Joins the Upscaling War
In the ongoing debate among PC gamers about whether DLSS and FSR are fantastic or not so great innovations, Sony’s PlayStation Pro version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 introduces PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), their proprietary upscaler. Remarkably, this feature is only accessible in the 60Hz mode because it becomes unnecessary when operating at 120Hz since it’s already optimized for higher refresh rates.
As per Thomas Morgan’s assessment, the outcomes are commendable, yet not flawless. Some sequences may exhibit intermittent white pixels flickering, a phenomenon often associated with suboptimal implementation of DLSS in PC games.
According to the Rendering Director of Black Ops 6, Michal Drobot, a solution for the current issue will be implemented through an upcoming update. This update will become available only after it undergoes quality assurance testing.
One interesting aspect of the PlayStation 5 Pro edition is its compatibility with variable refresh rate (VRR) displays, which allows for smoother gameplay and less screen tearing.
If you set a 120Hz monitor with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) to run at 60Hz while playing a game, the console makes an additional API call to anticipate the duration of the next frame.
When it identifies continuous idle periods, it leverages those spares moments to advance and produce the subsequent frame, thereby reducing input delay and boosting frame rates above the specified limit in the settings by doing so.
Using this method streamlines the campaign process, benefiting competitive multiplayer scenarios, as even the slightest fraction of a second can make a significant difference.
In spite of challenges related to the anti-cheat system and questionable monetization strategies tied to the Squid Game crossover, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has solidified itself as an outstanding addition and one of the best games in the series in quite a while.
