What to Expect From the Battlefield Franchise in 2025

Over the past few years, it has been frequently pointed out that the Battlefield series seems to have lost some of its luster. It’s challenging to argue against such statements, given the rocky launches of games like Battlefield V with its technical glitches and lack of the series’ characteristic ambiance and expansiveness. Battlefield 2042, unfortunately, has taken this a step further by significantly altering the formula and delivering a host of performance problems.

As a longtime fan of the Battlefield franchise, I find myself on the edge of my seat as the future of this beloved series hangs in the balance. With over two decades of memories and countless hours spent on the virtual battlefields of Battlefield, it’s hard not to feel a sense of nostalgia mixed with anticipation for what comes next. The latest installment has been met with mixed reviews, leaving fans like me wondering if this iconic franchise will make a comeback or fade into obscurity. I can only hope that the developers take heed of the feedback and deliver a game worthy of its legacy, one that will once again place Battlefield atop the mountain of great gaming franchises.

The upcoming Battlefield game hasn’t been officially named just yet, but we’ll refer to it as Battlefield 6 in this piece for simplicity.

What Fans Should Expect From Battlefield in 2025

Battlefield 6 Will Be Taking a Back to Basics Approach

Previously in February, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson shared a piece indicating that the upcoming Battlefield game would follow a “returning to its origins strategy.” In September, this speculation was confirmed when Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn and Group GM for EA Studios Organization, had an interview with IGN about the future direction of the Battlefield series.

In the interview, Zampella emphasized a return to fundamental principles for Battlefield, expressing that Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 represent the peak of the series. He also mentioned EA’s intention to revisit the essence of Battlefield. This conversation further revealed that the gameplay limit will be increased to accommodate 64 players once more, and character classes are making a comeback. However, in Battlefield 2042, the Specialists will not be included.

At Least Three Studios Are Working on Battlefield 6

At present, at least four studios are known to be developing Battlefield 6. The main multiplayer component is being overseen by franchise creator DICE, while the single-player part of the game is being handled by EA Motive, who were also responsible for the Dead Space Remake. Additionally, Criterion Games, known for their work on Need for Speed, are lending a hand with both aspects of Battlefield 6’s development.

One Studio Is Working on a New Battlefield Experience

Ripple Effect Studios, known for their connection to the original Medal of Honor series, is currently developing a fresh Battlefield gameplay experience. According to Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, this new Battlefield title is rumored to be a standalone battle royale game, potentially launching together with Battlefield 6, similar to Call of Duty: Warzone and each annual Call of Duty installment.

Battlefield 6 Will Begin Community Testing in Early 2025

According to Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn, a community-focused initiative for the game Battlefield 6 is planned for release in 2025. In a meeting with EA investors shortly afterwards, Battlefield GM Byron Beede also referred to this program, describing it as a comprehensive, community-centric testing project scheduled to commence early in the coming year.

As someone who has been following the gaming industry for over two decades now, I have a strong feeling that Battlefield 6 could be unveiling an Alpha or Beta testing program soon. Given my past experiences with these types of programs, I can tell you it’s always exciting to get a sneak peek at upcoming games and provide feedback to the developers before they hit the market. If this turns out to be true, fans like myself might have the privilege of playing Battlefield 6 as early as next year – an opportunity that I wouldn’t want to miss!

Battlefield 6 Could Arrive as Early as October 2025

In Tom Henderson’s first report from February 2024, he indicated that the developers of Battlefield 6 were aiming for a potential release in October 2025. Although this release date hasn’t been officially verified yet, there are hints that it might indeed be accurate.

According to Zampella and Beede, EA has been consistently testing Battlefield 6 every week for quite some time now, and daily tests have been ongoing for over a year. While it’s not definitive, this could imply that Battlefield 6 is well into its development phase. If Battlefield 6 doesn’t launch in 2025, fans should at least be prepared for an official unveiling by the end of this year.
