As an observer with a keen interest in anime, I must say that the Ranma 1/2 remake was a delightful surprise this year, despite the unfortunate incident of leaked episodes prior to its Netflix debut. Having followed the original series since the 90s, it’s fascinating to see how the new adaptation has captured the essence of the manga and eliminated filler episodes.
However, the situation with the “Love Letter from China” left me a bit perplexed. As an international fan, I was eager to enjoy the song on various music streaming platforms, but alas, it seems that I’ll have to rely on YouTube for now – unless I have a secret connection in Japan!
On a lighter note, I can’t help but chuckle at the irony of leaked episodes impacting the debut audience, while the song remains elusive across borders. Perhaps the creators are trying to send a message: “You can watch the series anytime, anywhere, but if you want the music, you’ll have to come to Japan!” It’s a bit like Ranma himself – always full of unexpected twists and turns!
One noteworthy event this year was the remake of “Ranma 1/2.” Following its announcement in June, there was much excitement for its release. Regrettably, it turned out to be one of those Netflix anime series that were illegally distributed online weeks before its official premiere. This early release can be attributed to certain security concerns surrounding Iyuno, a post-production collaborator of Netflix. Additionally, Crunchyroll was also impacted, but it appears that Netflix suffered the most significant blow, with several major titles being leaked.
Due to the leak prior to its release on October 6, 2024, it’s likely that the remake attracted fewer viewers compared to what it might have without the leak. However, fans have praised it for eliminating filler episodes and more accurately adapting the manga than the initial anime. Despite this setback, a second season has been confirmed for broadcast at a later time.
To mark the debut of the fresh series, a sneak peek for the show titled “Love Letter from China” has been shared. Interestingly, the track is accessible on Spotify, Apple Music and various music streaming platforms; however, as of now, it seems to be exclusively available in Japan. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate the song on those platforms at the time of writing, although we did come across another version of it.
The Original Love Letter from China
A classic from the 1980s
The tune titled “Love Letter from China,” famously recognized as “Chaina Kara no Tegami” in Japan, is a track featured on the original soundtrack of the anime series, Ranma 1/2. This song was exclusively released in Japan back in 1989, and it was beautifully sung by Kappei Yamaguchi and Megumi Hayashibara – the voice actors portraying the male and female forms of the main character, Ranma.
As a longtime fan of anime, I have witnessed numerous instances where old series are brought back to life with new animations and updated themes. However, from my personal perspective, it seems that in this particular case, there appears to be no significant change in the music, which leads me to believe they may not have asked the actors to re-record it. The fact that the voice actors are reprising their roles suggests that the original recording might have been considered good enough to use again. This is different from my experience with the Urusei Yatsura opening, where a new version was created. I find it interesting how these decisions are made and how they can impact the overall feel of a beloved series.
The video incorporates animations from the remake, and for a vintage feel, additional effects simulate it playing on an antique television. The presentation of the lyrics within the video gives off a karaoke-style vibe.
While global listeners can undoubtedly watch the track on YouTube, it appears that they won’t find it on other popular music streaming services for now. I can hardly wait for the day when it becomes available everywhere!
Ranma 1/2 is now streaming on Netflix, both subbed and dubbed.
