- Some Devil Fruit users, like Kuzan and Wolf, can travel through water with their abilities.
- Unique Devil Fruit users like Pizarro merge with islands, enabling travel across water.
As a retired naval officer and pirate, I’ve seen my fair share of the seven seas! From the treacherous waters of the Grand Line to the calm currents of the East Blue, I’ve traversed them all, each voyage bringing its own set of challenges and triumphs.
The life of a seafarer is no easy feat, but it’s one I wouldn’t trade for anything. Each ship I’ve sailed on has had its quirks and peculiarities – some more so than others, like Ace’s fiery Striker or Mr. 3’s wax-powered vessel.
But let’s not forget the simple raft that got me out of a tight spot during my days as a Whitebeard Pirate. It was nothing fancy, but it did the job when I needed to make a quick escape from Blackbeard’s clutches.
Now, if only we could find a way to harness the power of our Devil Fruits for more than just transportation… Imagine if I could use my Mera Mera no Mi to light up the entire ocean like a bonfire! But alas, that’s a tale for another day. For now, I’ll stick to navigating these waters and enjoying the simple pleasures of life at sea – like a good rum and a hearty meal after a long day on the open ocean.
Oh, and remember: always keep one eye on the horizon, lest you miss the treasure that awaits! Arrrr!
In all known cases of Devil Fruit users, they lack the ability to swim. If too much of their body is underwater, their powers become significantly diminished, or even completely nullified. This weakness makes it difficult for most Devil Fruit users to traverse bodies of water directly.
Some individuals who consume Devil Fruits manage to bypass this limitation, usually utilizing the newfound abilities they received as part of the trade-off. Although many might not consider a swim anytime soon, all these users possess the capacity to traverse bodies of water.
1. Kuzan
A Cold Narrow Road
- Debut: Chapter 303 (Manga), Episode 225 (Anime)
Originally serving as an esteemed Marine Admiral known as “Aokiji,” Kuzan later joined forces with the Blackbeard Pirates, ranking among their Ten Major Captains. He’s a rather laid-back and leisurely individual who feels that justice isn’t often worth pursuing following the Ohara Incident. Unsurprisingly, his preferred mode of travel is quite straightforward – he enjoys cycling.
As a long-time fan of One Piece and someone who has followed the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates since their early days, I can say with confidence that Kuzan, also known as Aokiji, is one of the most intriguing characters in the series. His ability to manipulate ice gives him a unique edge in battle, allowing him to create and control it at will.
One memorable encounter I recall was when Kuzan confronted the Straw Hat Pirates at Long Ring Long Land. Using his Hie Hie no Mi powers, he froze the surrounding waters, turning them into solid ice, which enabled him to ride across on his bicycle, Ao Chari. It was a breathtaking scene that showcased both Kuzan’s power and creativity.
However, it’s unclear what happened to Ao Chari after that encounter, but ever since then, Kuzan has been seen riding atop Camel, a large penguin who can also tread water. It seems that Camel is now his preferred mode of transportation, as it requires less effort on Kuzan’s part compared to the bicycle.
Overall, Kuzan’s ability to control ice and his choice of transportation have made him a formidable adversary in the One Piece universe, and I can’t wait to see what other challenges he faces in the future.
2. Sanjuan Wolf
Too Big To Fail
- Debut: Chapter 575 (Manga), Episode 484 (Anime)
Sanjuan Wolf is a colossal figure hailing from the Western Blue. His past transgressions were so heinous that they allegedly warranted expunging his presence from historical records. He was imprisoned on the clandestine sixth level of Impel Down, a place reserved for the most hardened criminals. Following a ferocious battle to the death organized by Blackbeard, Sanjuan survived and eventually joined Blackbeard’s crew as one of its Ten Titanic Captains, making him the sole giant with this distinction.
The Deka Deka no Mi, or Wolf’s Devil Fruit, expands his size significantly, earning him the nickname “Colossal Battleship.” In this form, he stands as one of the world’s tallest giants, surpassing even the ancient giants known for their immense stature. Unlike many users of Devil Fruits, Wolf appears able to traverse water by walking on it. His enormous size suggests that a portion of his body remains dry, thus avoiding the direct weakness associated with most Devil Fruits. While in the water, he seems to experience some level of fatigue but can endure for an extended period without any apparent side effects or limitations from prolonged exposure. Thrown into the ocean by Monkey D. Garp, this suggests a vulnerability to water, though his size when activated seems to mitigate this weakness somewhat.
3. Avalo Pizarro
An Island Boy
- Debut: Chapter 575 (Manga), Episode 484 (Anime)
Avalo Pizarro was once a ruler who was dethroned and ended up at Impel Down, eventually joining Blackbeard’s elite group of Ten Titanic Captains. His unique Devil Fruit, the Shima Shima no Mi, grants him the power to transform into an island and control it. This ability is somewhat similar to Pica’s Ishi Ishi no Mi, but Avalo can merge with entire islands instead of just stones. However, this means that any harm inflicted on the island also affects him, unlike Pica’s power. Despite this drawback, his ability appears to be stronger in one key aspect.
Through transforming into and controlling an island, Pizarro seems able to move across bodies of water. Since the Shima Shima no Mi is a relatively new Devil Fruit, details about this ability are sparse. It’s unclear if Pizarro’s body is only partially merged with the island or if his “island” form doesn’t fully submerge in water, which could potentially make it inconsequential for him as a pirate. Yet, these assumptions remain speculative at this point.
4. Charlotte Perospero
A Candy Cruise
- Debut: Chapter 834 (Manga), Episode 795 (Anime)
Charlotte Perospero is the oldest child of Big Mom and holds a position as an officer within the Big Mom Pirates. He serves as the Minister of Candy, much like several of his other siblings who occupy similar roles, and possesses a unique Devil Fruit ability: the Pero Pero no Mi. This power enables him to produce sweets and shape them into various items, such as weapons, prosthetic limbs, and it appears, even a fully operational lab.
Observing from a distance, it’s evident that Perospero’s simple candy sea slug seems less extraordinary in comparison to his other elaborate creations. However, what makes this particular piece stand out is not just its ability to transport people across the water, but also Big Mom’s innovative touch. With her Soru Soru no Mi, she breathed life into the candy sea slug, enabling it to attack the Straw Hat Pirates.
Yet, despite these impressive modifications, it’s essential to acknowledge that Perospero’s original creation was already capable of navigating the seas before undergoing any changes.
5. Portgas D. Ace
His Own Fuel Source
- Debut: Chapter 154 (Manga), Episode 91 (Anime)
Portgas D. Ace possessed the Fire-Fire Fruit (Mera Mera no Mi), enabling him to control, manipulate, and generate fire. Despite the fact that using a Devil Fruit doesn’t impede swimming ability, Ace might struggle in water. Luckily, Ace’s comrade, Masked Deuce, designed a raft that Ace could utilize. The Fire-Fire Fruit powered Striker, which served as Ace’s primary means of navigating the waters. Even with his crew expanding, upon joining the Whitebeard Pirates, Ace utilized Striker in solo missions, necessitating him to carve a path through the sea. Notably, he was seen using Striker for solo travel during both the Alabasta saga and the storyline where he pursued Blackbeard alone.
It’s worth noting that Ace isn’t the only character who employs this particular strategy; there are others like Galdino, also known as Mr. 3, who had a boat that utilized his wax as its power source. Similarly, Enel’s flying ark, Maxim, was essentially an electric vehicle fueled by his Devil Fruit abilities.
