As a lifelong cinephile who’s seen more Superman movies than I can count on one hand (and still have fingers left over), I must say that the hype surrounding James Gunn’s take on the Man of Steel is nothing short of exhilarating! The teaser trailer has truly set a new benchmark for anticipation, with its 250 million views in just 24 hours. That’s more than the number of people who watched the entire original Superman trilogy combined!
It’s refreshing to see a return to the Silver Age Superman, and Gunn’s promise of a kinder, more compassionate Superman strikes a chord with me. After years of darker takes on the character, it feels like we’re finally getting the Superman we deserve.
That being said, I have my concerns about Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps. While I admire their track record (especially pre-Endgame), let’s not forget that they’ve never tackled a team as iconic as the Fantastic Four. On the other hand, Superman has been around for 83 years, and Warner Bros. has had more than enough time to get it right.
In all seriousness, I wouldn’t be surprised if Superman ends up being the highest-grossing comic book movie of 2025. If not, I’ll just have to console myself with the knowledge that I saw the teaser trailer before it became cool.
And as a final thought, let me leave you with this joke: How did Superman find his missing dog Krypto? He used his X-ray vision and found him hiding in plain sight – under his bed! Because even superheroes can forget where they left their pets sometimes.
Six months before its release, James Gunn’s “Superman” movie kicked off the New Year with a bang, securing the top spot on IMDb’s list of most eagerly awaited films in 2025.
Evidence that the business sector was fascinated by Gunn’s concept of Superman emerged following the launch of the teaser trailer, which garnered an unprecedented 250 million views in just 24 hours across all platforms and became DC and Warner Bros.’ most-watched trailer ever. Preliminary screenings of Superman have been likened to the quality of Guardians of the Galaxy. The scheduled release date of July 11, 2025, will signify a return to the big screen for this iconic character after an absence of 12 years and a month.
Superman’s Hype Is at Boiling Point for 2025
In January 2025, IMDb published their yearly list of the ten most eagerly awaited films. The Superman film took the top spot, followed by the sequel to 28 Days Later and a Marvel Studios production titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps in second and third place respectively. The description for Superman notes that it will move away from Snyder’s dark portrayal of Superman, instead offering “a Superman who embodies kindness, love, and compassion – a character who represents the best aspects of humanity despite being an alien from another world.” Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot’s live-action adaptation of Snow White, which has been met with some controversy, is also noteworthy on this list.
Despite facing a string of mixed-to-negative reviews on the big screen since 1983’s Superman III and being overshadowed by Batman and Spider-Man in terms of popularity among comic book characters, recent developments suggest that Superman’s standing has significantly improved. The main credit for this resurgence in popularity goes to the teaser trailer, which offered visual evidence of James Gunn’s commitment to reviving the Silver Age Superman. Prior to the release of the teaser, Superman ranked ninth on Fandango’s list of most anticipated movies of 2025, but now it has moved up to sixth place on IMDb’s list, surpassing Captain America: Brave New World which previously held the top spot.
It appears that “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” may pose the only significant competition for Superman’s dominance, assuming the trailer gets released. Although some might dismiss its impact on a Superman-familiar audience, Marvel Studios’ past successes (excluding “Avengers: Endgame”) and the lack of recent live-action Fantastic Four productions make it an important factor to consider. Kevin Feige seems optimistic about its prospects, scheduling “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” for a July 25 release, which is just two weeks following Superman’s.
Warner Bros. and the DC Studios led by James Gunn and Peter Safran are no doubt elated by the excitement surrounding the upcoming Superman film. Now, they eagerly anticipate making it the top-grossing comic book production of 2025. Given Superman’s popularity, a box office take that matches or falls short of the $670 million earned by Man of Steel in 2013 might still be profitable, but it could be perceived as less than impressive by Warner Bros. executives and film industry analysts.
