Summary
- Final Fantasy 14‘s recent server outage in North America was likely caused by a power outage, not a DDoS attack.
- Players experienced server disconnects affecting all four NA Data Centers.
- Square Enix is currently investigating the matter.
On January 5th, there was a significant downtime for the game Final Fantasy 14, as all four North American servers momentarily shut down around 8:00 PM Eastern. Players on social media speculate that the server problems were possibly due to a power outage in Sacramento, triggered by a transformer explosion, before they came back online approximately an hour later after initial reports.
It’s important to note that this recent issue isn’t an isolated case for Final Fantasy 14‘s servers; they’ve faced significant technical troubles in the past. In fact, during the year 2024, these servers were frequently targeted by distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. These attacks would send excessive data to the servers, causing them to overflow and malfunction. As a result, players of Final Fantasy 14 experienced higher latency than usual, making the game nearly unplayable due to frequent disconnections. Square Enix has employed various strategies to reduce the impact of these attacks, but unfortunately, there’s no foolproof method to prevent them altogether. A potential solution for players is to use a virtual private network (VPN) to enhance their connection.
Despite recent DDoS attacks on Final Fantasy 14, the latest server problem stemmed from a distinct incident. As reported on the r/ffxiv subreddit, players shared their in-game activities before the servers went offline. A Reddit user named Sarikitty, in response to a post by dunphy_Collapsable, mentioned hearing a loud explosion or popping noise in Sacramento, home to Final Fantasy 14‘s North American Data Centers. Other Reddit users corroborated the sound as being similar to a blown power transformer, which potentially caused a power outage affecting nearby Final Fantasy 14 data centers. The outage was reported around 8:00 PM Eastern, with servers returning online an hour later. Square Enix acknowledged the issue on the Lodestone and stated that the matter is currently under investigation.
Final Fantasy 14’s North American Data Centers Return From Major Outage
The Europe, Japan, and Oceanic data centers remained functional, indicating a possible isolated server outage incident. As I write this, it appears that the North American data centers for Final Fantasy 14 are gradually restoring their service, with Aether, Crystal, and Primal being the first to recover. Unfortunately, access to the Dynamis Data Center, the latest addition among Final Fantasy 14’s data centers, is still unavailable at this time.
As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the grand plans for Final Fantasy 14 in 2025, particularly the launch of the mobile version. Yet, we’re currently facing a significant challenge in the form of persistent server issues – another hurdle this game seems destined to conquer. Time will reveal the impact of these ongoing technical troubles.
