During your journey in NieR: Automata, although the narrative primarily revolves around the conflict between Androids and Machines, there’s a wealth of other sights to explore and activities to engage in across the world. One such activity is fishing, which can be enjoyed at your leisure and even skipped entirely if you prefer, depending on your playstyle.
In NieR: Automata, fishing isn’t about leveling up, but it offers a simple method of obtaining scarce items and amassing wealth quickly without depleting other resources while battling machines. Here’s a guide on how to fish in the game, along with tips on what to do with your catches.
How To Fish In NieR: Automata
Fishing can take place at virtually any body of water, including shallow ones where you might only go ankle-deep, such as the water surrounding the Resistance Camp. When you remain motionless in the water, a fishing icon will show up above your character’s head. Pressing and holding this button will cause your character to sit down and cast their fishing pod into the water. Fishing requires only one button press – to cast out the pod and bring it back in.

After you’ve thrown your fishing pod into the water, it’s a game of patience until something bites on the bait. The pod may bob up and down, but hold off on reeling in for now. You should wait until the pod is completely submerged underwater and makes a distinct plopping sound before swiftly pressing the reel-in button. You’ll have just a second to respond, or else the fish might escape, requiring you to cast again. Feel free to cast and recast as many times as you want without any limits, so enjoy fishing for as long as you like, catching as many fish or debris as your heart desires.
Instead, consider this option: There’s an available add-on chip that places a fishing symbol at the upper right corner of your screen when you’re standing within a fishable waterbody.
Rewards For Fishing In NieR: Automata

In various bodies of water, whether it’s a serene pond or a less-than-appealing sewer, the items you catch while fishing – either fish or valuable junk – can fetch a decent sum of money. This is an efficient and relatively swift way to amass funds, particularly beneficial for those aiming to enhance their plug-in chip’s maximum capacity early on in the game. Interestingly, if you choose to fish in the sewer, there’s a chance you might find the Iron Pipe, a weapon that can be quite effective in the game, depending on your luck.
