Why Hyper Light Breaker Tells Its Story Through Comic Book Panels

The game titled Hyper Light Breaker is about to start its Early Access phase. Following the acclaim and accomplishment of the 2016 release, Hyper Light Drifter, Heart Machine is revisiting the same universe but steering the series towards a fresh path. Unlike its predecessor’s retro 2D pixel aesthetic and isometric gameplay, Hyper Light Breaker presents itself as a fully 3D “open-world roguelike,” with an art style that aligns more closely with the studio’s 2021 project, Solar Ash.

Much like Hyper Light Drifter, Hyper Light Breaker doesn’t follow a conventional approach in delivering its narrative. Instead of using dialogue, it employs comic-style panels to portray the story, creating an immersive “show, don’t tell” atmosphere. In an interview with Game Rant, narrative director Laura Michet and lead producer Michael Clark explained why this method is powerful and how Hyper Light Breaker plans to use and enhance it to effectively communicate its tale.

Hyper Light Breaker’s Unique Narrative Presentation

One intriguing feature of the game “Hyper Light Drifter” is its silence, as neither the Drifter nor many NPCs speak. However, players can glean much about each character’s history and present condition from their interactions, which are conveyed through a brief sequence of images.

Clark pointed out that the team deeply embraced the principle of “demonstrate rather than explain,” highlighting its effectiveness in engaging players more profoundly by leaving certain aspects unsaid and allowing them to immerse themselves in the storyline.

It functions beyond text and speech, fitting flawlessly into the intricate universes we design. Our universes are rich and thought-provoking, and our players find delight in exploring and sharing their discoveries about them.

In the case of Hyper Light Drifter’s universe, it resonated deeply with fans, creating fulfilling and impactful experiences while also contributing to the backstory and environment of the game, parts of which are open to various interpretations. By emphasizing visual storytelling over explicit exposition, Hyper Light Breaker aims to let players immerse themselves in the narrative at their own pace, encouraging them to express their thoughts and engage with other enthusiasts as they explore.

Correspondingly, as previously mentioned, Hyper Light Drifter features a set of engraved monuments whose meanings were ultimately deciphered by diligent fans through the interpretation of game symbols.

Hyper Light Breaker Will Expand on Its Predecessor’s Storytelling Sensibilities

Michet clarified that the mysterious imagery employed in Hyper Light Drifter served as a basis for utilizing those strategies in Hyper Light Breaker. By structuring the story elements of Breaker in a fashion reminiscent of the initial game, while taking into account design alterations, will facilitate how players decipher and untangle the new plotline.

In developing Breaker, we aimed to adopt and expand upon the narrative methods found in Hyper Light Drifter. We believe that by fragmenting the story in this manner, we can create intriguing structural possibilities and engage players to conjecture and explore as they piece together the story from multiple viewpoints.

Hyper Light Breaker aims to uphold the storytelling methods of Drifter, while breathing new life into the old formula by integrating them within a novel approach. The game’s unique story is presented through interactive narratives set against a procedurally generated backdrop, and it abides by the “show, don’t tell” principle to captivate players as they unfold its mysteries, fostering engaging discussions among them.
