2025 is shaping up to be an incredible year for gamers who love strategy and warfare! I can hardly wait to dive back into the immersive world of wargaming, where history meets fantasy in a thrilling blend of tactical depth and captivating gameplay. Whether you’re a battle-hardened veteran or a rookie eager to join the ranks, there’s a game out there for everyone this year. From authentic military simulations to fantastical battlegrounds that push the limits of imagination, these top 10 wargames are guaranteed to deliver unforgettable experiences. In this article, I’ll be your guide as we explore the most highly anticipated and exciting wargames set to dominate the gaming landscape in 2025 – helping you choose the perfect game for your next strategic conquest!
I examined my collection of war strategy games, selecting ten diverse ones from various time periods and distinct gameplay styles. To ensure these games are still relevant, I chose those that have either been re-released or significantly updated within the past couple of years. This list should provide a wide range of recommendations for people starting to play war strategy games in 2025.
Let me know if you agree, or if you think other games should be here!
10 – Second Front

There seems to be a considerable buzz surrounding the game Second Front prior to its 2022 launch, yet afterwards, it appears conversation about it has dwindled. It could simply be my observation, but I firmly believe that Second Front remains one of the top turn-based tactics wargames available today. To put it into words, Second Front is akin to Company of Heroes in its turn-based format, but with an incredibly intricate gameplay, teeming with multiple elements happening simultaneously. Fortunately, being turn-based makes juggling everything more manageable. The game offers a wealth of content, boasting hundreds of units and numerous maps for exploration, as well as an intuitive editor to design custom scenarios!
9 – Scramble: Battle of Britain

Originally, it spent a considerable amount of time in development with limited updates, but upon release, strategy enthusiasts and air combat experts were immediately drawn to it. The game “Scramble: Battle of Britain” is a tactical, turn-based dogfighting simulation where you command a flight squadron. In quick succession, you and your adversary decide on maneuvers for the upcoming turn – choosing between turning left or right, ascending or descending, firing bullets or abstaining. While making these decisions in a typical flight simulator feels instinctive, Scramble provides the luxury of contemplation before action. However, be aware that the game is still in Early Access, but being developed by Slitherine, this doesn’t deter me significantly.
8 – Scourge of War: Remastered

2024 saw the surprising launch of Armored Brigade 2 towards the year’s end, which prevented Scourge of War: Remastered from securing a top-10 spot among the Best Strategy Games of 2024. However, had there been no Armored Brigade 2, Scourge of War: Remastered would have easily made the list. The remaster embodies the ideal approach to updating a game – it preserves its core elements while enhancing everything else for an improved user experience. The game now runs smoothly, has increased draw distance, boasts superior graphics, features high-definition unit sprites, and eliminates the awkward input delay in controls. The rest of the game remains familiar, making Scourge of War: Remastered the ultimate choice for commanding Napoleonic armies in 2025, surpassing all other strategy war games available at that time.
7 – The Great War: Western Front

As a dedicated gamer immersed in historical strategy games, let me tell you that there’s no other World War 1 game quite like The Great War: Western Front. This game was meticulously crafted from the ground up with the sole intention of delivering an authentic World War 1 experience, offering mechanics and gameplay elements unique to it alone.
Much like Total War, it uses a grand campaign map, but that’s just the beginning. The meat of the game lies in the massive Real-Time Strategy (RTS) battles where you’ll spend most of your time. You’ll be constructing and enhancing your persistent trench network, commanding an array of troops from stormtroopers to ordinary infantry, tanks, multiple types of artillery, and even planes.
The battles in this game ebb and flow just as they did during the real war. One side might advance and seize enemy trenches, only for the defense to counterattack. This seesawing dynamic can continue for quite some time, with the largest engagements potentially lasting an hour or more.
6 – Armored Brigade 2

As a devoted fan, I’d say Armored Brigade 2 is essentially Armored Brigade but brought to life in stunning 3D. For me, this upgrade alone makes it one of the best wargames ever created. If you’re searching for a tactical-level wargame set during the Cold War with such intricate detail and scale, I firmly believe there isn’t a better choice available right now.
The transition to 3D has effectively resolved all my issues with the original game, where the top-down perspective made it difficult to position and move units. Now, you can rely on your natural vision and, for the most part, get it spot on without needing to constantly adjust the field of view tool to see what your soldiers could see.
The icing on this fantastic game would be if they allowed for even more precise control over infantry movements. If that happens, I believe Armored Brigade 2 will be unbeatable.
