Den of Thieves 2: Pantera Actors Discuss Their On/Off-Screen Dynamic

In the sequel to “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” audiences are once again plunged into the realm of intricate heists. The story finds Gerard Butler reprising his role as the unconventional police officer, ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien, who is hot on the trail of Donnie Wilson (portrayed by O’Shea Jackson Jr.), the cunning architect of the initial film’s incidents. This time around, their paths seem to cross in a joint mission to pull off a difficult diamond heist, which could potentially blur Big Nick’s image as the film’s primary ‘hero.’

Game Rant recently had a chat with Butler and Jackson Jr. regarding “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera”. They shared their experiences working together this time, finding it effortless to revisit the mental spaces of their characters. Given potential future “Den of Thieves” sequels, the interplay between these two characters is a significant aspect of the series’ universe.

Butler and Jackson Jr.’s On-Screen Dynamic is Electric

2018’s “Den of Thieves” introduced us to Big Nick, a boisterous, headstrong cop who goes all out to complete his assignments without mercy. In contrast, Donnie was initially portrayed as a skilled getaway driver for a group of cunning crooks. However, the film’s finale unveiled that Donnie was not just an expert driver; he had meticulously planned the main heist and slipped away from Big Nick just in time. Interestingly, they find themselves collaborating on a European heist later, which seems to have strengthened their characters’ bond. When it comes to working together, Jackson Jr. mentions that this collaboration positively impacts their characters. Regarding working with Butler, Jackson Jr. expressed his thoughts.

Upon learning that Nick would join me in our film project, I felt as if I’d stepped into a new realm. It was similar to acquiring a top competitor’s star player, making the experience thrilling. I realized this collaboration meant deeper insights into Gerard and closer friendship. On set, we shared advice on career paths, personal experiences, and more. We grew close, which undeniably added depth to our on-screen chemistry.

Butler’s ‘Big Nick’ Has Changed Since the First Movie

The bond between Butler and Jackson Jr. flourished on-screen as well as off, significantly contributing to the authenticity of their portrayed dynamic. For Butler, reprising his role as Big Nick was effortless, despite the character’s significant transformation since the initial film. While Butler has portrayed numerous tough characters in the past, viewers might find themselves taken aback by the toned-down version of the exuberant, over-the-top character they encountered in 2018. This time, however, Butler is presenting a character whose bravado has been subdued. He elaborated on this shift.

I found it surprisingly fitting to reconnect with Nick, but I had to let go of certain aspects. His confidence has taken a hit, so he didn’t need to be as overtly aggressive and boastful, which strangely opened up more room for humor, emotion, and vulnerability. Even in his unpredictable moments, there were layers to him, so I felt I could express more by not being as decisive about some of those choices as I was in the initial film.

Butler’s confession implies that a more controlled version of Big Nick may surface in the next installment. A character not as erratic, yet equally powerful. Directors Christian Gudegast and Tucker Tooley are open to additional sequels, providing ample opportunity for Butler and O’Shea Jr.’s relationship to grow further.
