- The new teaser hints at a possible chronological order for the game’s split narrative.
Enthusiasts can’t wait for the debut of “The Second Season of The Last of Us,” which will follow Naughty Dog’s second game in the series, “The Last of Us Part 2.” Just like the first season, “The Last of Us” Season 2 appears to be a faithful adaptation of its original content, and this is clearly demonstrated in the most recent preview trailer.
The first season of “The Last of Us” introduced viewers to Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), an unconventional pair navigating a post-apocalyptic America filled with dangerous fungal zombies, similar to the video game created by Naughty Dog. As for Season 2, it faces a greater challenge in adapting a longer game with a more intricate storyline. Nevertheless, the trailer hints at many delightful Easter eggs and nods to the original game that fans will appreciate.
This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2.
Abby’s Flashback
One recurring theme in The Last of Us Part 2 that keeps drawing players back is the Salt Lake City hospital, a significant location for Abby’s emotional turmoil as it was the site where her father was fatally shot by Joel during the rescue of Ellie at the end of the first game. This event serves as the catalyst for Abby’s quest for vengeance, and players often witness her reliving this traumatic event in dreams. The recent teaser for The Last of Us Season 2 starts with the flashing red lights and sirens characteristic of the hospital sequence, depicting Abby walking down a familiar corridor. This scene’s appearance suggests that Season 2 may present Abby’s perspective and potentially unfold chronologically rather than adhering to the game’s timeline. The teaser also offers a glimpse into Kaitlyn Dever’s portrayal of Abby, as she delivers lines during the voiceover.
Regardless of whether you possess a code similar to mine, there are certain actions that people universally consider as being fundamentally unacceptable.
Ellie and Dina’s Dance
At E3 2018, one of the early promotional scenes for The Last of Us Part 2 showcased a dance between Ellie and her friend (later girlfriend) Dina, set in Jackson. This moment happened before the game’s start but was presented later in the narrative through flashbacks. The brief scene hinted at the romance between Dina (played by Isabela Merced) and Ellie, mirroring how it unfolds in the actual game. If this dance sequence appears in Season 2 of an adaptation, it would be unexpected as the flashback is quite late in the game, suggesting that the timeline could undergo significant changes during the adaption process.
Attack on Jackson
In the first trailer for Season 2 of “The Last of Us”, we get a detailed look at the Jackson prologue section from the game, where we meet characters like Jesse (Young Mazino) and Catherine O’Hara’s character. The second trailer mainly focuses on Seattle, but it also includes scenes from Jackson, specifically showing the settlement preparing for an attack in the snow. Gabriel Luna’s character Tommy is seen readying at the walls of the settlement with a rifle. This scene doesn’t appear in the game, suggesting it might be exclusive to the series. The game does feature an attack by infected hordes that chase Abby, leading her to encounter Joel and Tommy on patrol. It’s uncertain if this new sequence will follow or supplement the original scene where Joel and Abby cross paths in “The Last of Us”.
Isaac
In Season 2 of “The Last of Us,” Jeffrey Wright is returning as Isaac, a role he previously played. The second trailer for the series also features Wright as the WLF leader, suggesting a larger part for Isaac. Previously, hints indicated an expanded role for Isaac in “The Last of Us” Season 2. However, his presence in the new season may imply that the storyline will follow a more chronological approach, as his character appears only in Abby’s game segments.
The Hospital
The concluding moment of the latest trailer for The Last of Us seems to hint at the extent of the story that the new episodes will explore. Specifically, a scene depicting Ellie strolling down a corridor illuminated by red light while clutching a firearm appears significant. Notably, this shot bears a striking resemblance to one from the game that occurs towards the end of Day 2, when Ellie tracks down Nora, an accomplice of Abby. In the game, following an intense pursuit through a Seattle hospital, Ellie eventually corners Nora in a secluded area and subjects her to torture for information about Abby’s location. If this guess is correct, it implies that the upcoming season will delve into all of Ellie’s experiences during her first and second days in Seattle.
Seraphites
As a devoted movie enthusiast immersed in the gripping world of “The Last of Us Part 2,” I’m excited to share some insights about an intriguing new adversary that has just surfaced – The Seraphites, also known as Scars. In the latest teaser, we catch a glimpse of these formidable enemies, and one particular shot stands out, where a hooked scythe glides ominously over a tree trunk. This scene could potentially belong to various moments in the game or it might be an entirely new sequence yet to unfold. The scene that seems most plausible from the gameplay is towards the end of Abby’s initial chapter in Seattle, where she gets captured by the Seraphites in the forest. In this image, we see someone standing on a tree trunk, which could very well be Abby or one of the captives hanging from trees in that scene.
The quick 60-second sneak peek of The Last of Us Season 2 offers a mix of familiar shots from past previews and intriguing new scenes that have left fans eagerly anticipating its April premiere, amplifying their excitement for the series.
The Last of Us Season 2 will be released on Max in April.
