Assassin’s Creed Shadows Devs Reveal New Parkour Details

As an ardent admirer of the Assassin’s Creed series, I can’t help but get excited when Ubisoft shares insights into their latest creations. Today, they unveiled a fresh blog post showcasing the intricate parkour systems for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. The detail and finesse they put into crafting these seamless movement mechanics always leaves me in awe!

Parkour has been a vital component of every Assassin’s Creed game, and it appears to serve as a useful resource in Shadows. In Shadows, parkour will be an outstanding aspect for exploration and a crucial element for stealth and combat. Naoe is adept at parkour, allowing her to swiftly climb castles, leap across rooftops, and glide through the crowds in the streets of Kyoto by utilizing her speed and agility. Discover how parkour functions in Assassin’s Creed Shadows below.

New Parkour Inputs for Assassin’s Creed Shadows

In the approaching game, certain controls have been altered to incorporate new features. Specifically, the positions of the crouch and dodge buttons have been reversed to enable prone positioning and make it possible for dodging actions to trigger directly into parkour movements.

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the dodge and parkour mechanics have been combined through the use of a revised input system. This updated control scheme will also eliminate the option to switch stances while descending from rooftops, allowing for seamless transitions between all stances during such actions. Additionally, players can expect new dodging abilities with the press of the dodge button, including acrobatic leaps over railings, exits through windows, and silent drop-downs.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Parkour Moves

Parkour Up

Individuals who have experienced past Assassin’s Creed titles will recognize a feature that enables players to press a button to climb any building or structure they choose, and this free-running mechanic will also be incorporated into Shadows. This functionality operates while scaling walls, jumping over distances, and leaping from great heights. It’s worth noting that Naoe has superior abilities in terms of longer jumps and reaching greater heights compared to Yasuke.

Recovery Roll

Players can perform an Igan Recovery Roll by pushing the dodge/parkour down button when leaping from a distance. This maneuver significantly cushions the impact and lessens the noise.

Parkour Down

In this game, the latest Assassin’s Creed Shadows parkour system takes center stage as it combines dodge and parkour abilities. By pressing the dodge button close to a ledge, players can smoothly transition into a parkour down traversal. For Naoe, this results in graceful descents, while Yasuke performs heavy drops. The parkour down feature ensures that you’ll reach the lowest, safest point beneath your character and prevent unnecessary jumps into empty spaces.

Sprint Mechanics

In the game, a fresh feature specifically designed for Naoe, the swiftest assassin within the series, has been implemented. This function enables players to perform a prolonged dive roll across obstacles like fences, crates, railings, and so forth.

In addition to its main features, Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces two new mechanics: automatic jumps and shoulder charges. The automatic jump feature enables characters to perform acrobatic leaps over smaller obstacles effortlessly. Conversely, the shoulder charge is a unique ability for Yasuke, enabling him to plow through enemies or destructible objects while running at high speed. If he encounters non-destructible items, however, Yasuke will perform an automatic jump, but it won’t be as graceful as Naoe.

Grappling Mechanics

In addition to sprinting and parkour, players of Assassin’s Creed Shadows have the ability to utilize a grappling hook as well. This useful device allows players to carry out vertical climbs and swing from hooks. Furthermore, players can scale seemingly impassable walls by running along them and using the grappling hook on an edge.

Advanced Parkour in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Stance dodges

In the world of combat for Naoe and Yasuke, there are three different positions: standing, crouching, and lying flat on the ground. Each position has its unique method of evading threats. While both Yasuke and Naoe can dodge in various directions when standing or crouching, only Naoe possesses the ability to dodge while lying flat. This special dodge enables her to move sideways, roll forward, or slide backwards.

Wall Run Eject

Due to her impressive acrobatics, Naoe is able to scale any vertical surface like it’s flat ground. With the Wall Eject tool, she can launch herself off a wall by activating the parkour function at the peak of her run. If her limbs are attached to a surface, this trick can even be performed during climbing.

Parkour Down Backward Dodge and High Structure Safety

The Parkour Down Backward Dodge technique lets your character move when they’re facing away from an edge. By pressing the parkour down key without adjusting direction, you can make them execute a backflip off the edge and land softly, producing a quiet thud.

In a novel safety system called Parkour Down High Structure Safety, characters are safeguarded from harm when falling becomes possible at high elevations. However, performing parkour-down transitions might cause your character to cling to the edge rather than falling or climbing further. To make them drop down or ascend, you’ll need to press an extra button for control.

Unclimbable Surfaces

In summary, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will include certain surfaces that the characters Yasuke and Naoe won’t be able to scale using parkour. This is because these surfaces lack any features for them to grip onto. Game Director Simon revealed that this decision is significant for them since it necessitates being “more mindful when designing engaging parkour routes.” Furthermore, this change gives them greater control over where Naoe can travel and where Yasuke cannot, thereby enhancing the contrast in gameplay style.

Despite some areas appearing challenging, developers assure players that they can be climbed in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, especially with the aid of the grappling hook. Occasionally, players should search for appropriate places to start their climb.
