Summary
- Initial D was a successful racing manga with international adaptations, but its sequel MF Ghost has been less popular.
- MF Ghost, a sequel to Initial D, is in its final arc with 21 volumes since 2017, but is ending soon.
- The term “climax” in manga can refer to high tension moments, not just the story’s ending, leading to potential confusion for readers.
In the 2000s, Initial D gained significant popularity among international audiences. What’s unusual is that a racing comic series not only endured for so long but also produced numerous successful adaptations across various platforms, and it revolves around the thrilling concept of drifting.
Although many anime enthusiasts from past decades are familiar with the title Initial D, its sequel MF Ghost appears to be less recognized, particularly outside of Japan. Even though it’s been transformed into an anime by Felix Film and distributed internationally, it hasn’t received as much attention compared to Initial D. Despite being available on Crunchyroll for streaming, its popularity seems not to have matched that of its predecessor.
Over the past few years, I’ve been passionately following this incredible manga that first appeared in 2017. So far, we’ve seen 21 captivating volumes unfold, which has certainly not disappointed! The series has undeniably amassed a devoted fanbase, at least within Japan. But On January 10th, the much-anticipated climax of its “final battle” will be unveiled in the upcoming Young Magazine issue. I can hardly contain my excitement for what’s to come!
It experienced a few pauses in the recent period. The first pause occurred between November 2022 and February 2023, attributed to Shuuichi Shigeno’s health issues. Subsequently, from April to June 2023, it was halted again, marking the beginning of its final storyline.
“Climax” Usually Means “Ending”
Manga magazines often employ the term “climax” to signify the pivotal points or crucial moments within a narrative, including its final moments. Yet, some creators might use it for scenes of intense tension that aren’t necessarily the end of the story, which is more prevalent in non-regular serializations. Although climax is commonly linked with the story’s conclusion, it can also refer to the wrap-up of a serialization phase, particularly when stories have extended gaps between instalments.
Due to the slight variation in meaning compared to the literary term “climax” (which signifies the peak of tension that sets the stage for the resolution, although not always marking the immediate conclusion of a narrative), it might perplex certain readers.
Rally Races with Eurobeat
Initial D introduces us to Takumi Fujiwara, a young man from Gunma Prefecture, who secretly participates in high-speed, underground street races with his vintage Toyota AE86. Surprisingly, his driving skills allow him to outmaneuver faster cars on the mountainous roads. The anime is not only popular for its adrenaline-pumping races and breathtaking drifting sequences, but also for its extensive use of Eurobeat music in its soundtrack. This unique musical element has earned it a dedicated fanbase who particularly enjoy this aspect.
In this new installment, set some time after the original storyline, we find ourselves following the adventures of Kanata Rivington, a student of Takumi, as he delves into the thrilling world of street racing.
You can stream “MF Ghost” on Crunchyroll, while the original comic book version, known as the manga, is digitally published in the United States by Kodansha USA.
