Tom Holland Revives A Trend From The 90s By Starring In A John Grisham Adaptation

Back in the ’90s, I was all about those upcoming Hollywood talents who shone brightly in the adaptations of John Grisham‘s novels. But then, with the arrival of the superhero era, they seemed to fade into the background.

  • The Firm (1993): Tom Cruise
  • The Pelican Brief (1993): Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington
  • The Chamber (1996): Chris O’Donnell
  • A Time to Kill (1996): Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Spacey
  • The Rainmaker (1997): Matt Damon, Claire Danes
  • The Gingerbread Man (1998): Kenneth Branagh

I’m thrilled to share that I, as a gamer, have secured a deal to star in and produce “The Partner”! This gripping drama is based on the 1997 John Grisham bestseller, and the brilliant Graham Moore from “The Imitation Game” is scripting it for Universal. Can’t wait to dive into this exciting project!

What Is The Partner About? Who Will Tom Holland Play?

Tom Holland is set to portray Patrick Lanigan, a young lawyer who has already attained partnership at a law firm located in Biloxi, Mississippi. Despite Biloxi not being known for intense legal rivalry, it indicates something about Lanigan’s abilities and aspirations.

However, he comes across an irresistible chance. In a cunning move, he stages his own demise by setting fire to a car. The objective? To pilfer $90 million from a dubious client. The complication? Lanigan was not only wedded but had a child. He abandons them both to embark on a lavish life in South America with the stolen wealth.

As soon as the sketchy client discovers that the funds have vanished, they realize Patrick Lanigan is still alive. This revelation sparks a desire for retribution in the client, and they are prepared to go to great lengths to seek it out. Dramatic pause.

Will The Partner Be Good?

Indeed, there’s a significant opportunity here. You might have observed that the number of movie adaptations from John Grisham’s works seems quite limited. Yet, it’s not because he lacks material. In fact, much like Stephen King, Grisham is highly productive and has penned more than 25 standalone novels that could be adapted for the screen.

It turns out that Hollywood noticed a decrease in profits from these kinds of productions. Let’s take a look at the cost versus the earnings at the box office.

  • The Firm (1993): $42M budget, $270.2M box office
  • The Pelican Brief (1993): $45M, $195.3M
  • The Chamber (1996): $40M, $22.5M
  • A Time to Kill (1996): $40M, $152M
  • The Rainmaker (1997): $40M, $45.9M
  • The Gingerbread Man (1998): $25M, $1.5M
  • Runaway Jury (2003): $60M, $80.2M

As a devoted reader, I’ve noticed a shift in audience response towards John Grisham’s signature writing style. Could it be that after two decades, this kind of storytelling has found its way back into being refreshingly appealing?

Ever since its inception, Tom Holland’s acting career has primarily focused on roles outside of live-action productions not linked to Spider-Man and non-streaming platforms. The exception is the movie adaptation of the video game “Uncharted,” which raked in an impressive $400M worldwide. With his upcoming film “The Partner,” we’ll get a sense of just how strong Tom Holland’s leading man appeal truly is.
