On YouTube’s People Make Games channel, a video was shared detailing concerning accusations about mistreatment within the gaming studio Brandoville. Notably, this studio had just partnered with Ubisoft for the development of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
As depicted in the video, it appears that Commissioner Cherry Lai consistently mishandled employee Christa Sydney throughout her employment period. This behavior encompassed both emotional and physical mistreatment.
According to the source, it’s not a solitary instance; the Brandoville commissioner has been implicated in multiple instances of misconduct involving other employees within the company as well.
After the report, Ubisoft expressed concern through Eurogamer about the latest news concerning Brandoville Studios.
Ubisoft firmly denounces any form of mistreatment, and their sympathies go out to the impacted team members.
The Brandoville Problem
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been pondering over some concerns regarding the ethical landscape and power relationships within this gaming studio, considering that the former CEO, Ken Lai, was once married to Cherry Lai. It’s essential to ensure fairness and transparency in all our dealings, especially when personal and professional ties are involved.
Prior to “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, Brandoville Studios had previously collaborated on prominent games such as the debut of “The Last of Us” and “Age of Empires 4”.
Back in August 2024, our beloved gaming studio shut down, leaving many of us heartbroken. It wasn’t until nearly a month later that some troubling allegations surfaced – reports of misconduct during the company’s operation.
According to TheGamer’s claims made in September 2024, Brandoville Studios was reportedly known for a demanding work environment, characterized by a “sporadic and abusive behavior” from their commissioner, Cherry Lai.
One particularly troubling event involves the commissioner instructing an employee named Christa Sydney to videotape herself being struck 100 times, as well as hitting her own head against a door, which ultimately led to a concussion.
Accusations made by colleagues against Cherry Lai involve appropriating a portion of the developers’ wages for personal spending and denying a rest period to an employee who had an early delivery.
In June 2024, the Mother and Child Bill was approved by Indonesia’s House of Representatives. This legislation ensures that new mothers receive a minimum of three months of paid maternity leave following childbirth. If any health issues arise post-delivery, this leave period can be extended for an additional three months.
In the past, maternity leave guidelines in Indonesia required a standard leave of 90 days, which was intended to be divided into 45 days prior to and 45 days after childbirth.
It’s heartening to observe Ubisoft addressing the ongoing issue of workplace abuse, even though they are no longer connected to the individuals who were allegedly involved.
