RESPONSE:: In response to TopMob’s query, BGS Studios has offered a comment regarding the striking similarities between their game, Fay Keeper, and the Pokémon franchise.
The team behind the studio claims they developed each pixel and line of code from the ground up, steering clear of any patented mechanisms to potentially avoid legal issues. Additionally, they highlighted several unique aspects in their game that distinguish it from Pokémon titles.
You can see their response in full below:
Initially, Fay Keeper might seem reminiscent of Pokémon due to its origins rooted in nostalgia. However, we’ve thoroughly investigated the legal aspects, ensuring every detail – from pixels to lines of code – was independently created by us. Moreover, we ensured to steer clear of any mechanics that could potentially lead to legal complications.
In this project, our aim is to design a game that evokes memories of classic Pokémon games while maintaining its unique identity through distinct mechanics and novel elements. Although we’re still in the development process, many of these innovative features remain hidden for now; however, here are some I can share with you:
- Quests system with main and side quests, so it’s closer to a turn-based RPG with monster-catching elements
- Player can pick their favourite Fay to follow them on the screen, as an actual companion/familiar with possible customization options in the future
- Day/Night systems
- Seasonal festivals where player gets to purchase exclusive items
- A huge focus on scenario/world-building, making this a beautiful 2D, pixel art game with an open world that players can explore

Judging from their answers about Fay Keeper, it seems they hold a particular viewpoint at BGS Studio.
A game that strongly resembles Pokémon has just been made available for pre-purchase on Steam. We had the chance to speak with the developers of “Fay Keeper,” a new creature-collecting game in which players gather and fight against numerous creatures known as “Fays.” They asked us to form a paid partnership, an offer that is rare in today’s gaming industry.
Initially examining it, our instincts suggested strongly that the game appears to be a close imitation of Pokémon.
The resemblance in both color scheme and characters suggests a striking similarity, and while it’s evident that the creators aim to cater to the eager PC Pokémon fanbase, there’s an undeniable sense of potential legal complications. You’ll even receive your own version called “Faydex.
TopMob has put together some side-by-side evaluations of Fay Keeper versus Pokémon, which you can expand for a more informed perspective on both. (Click to view the comparison in greater detail)
The developers of the game have acknowledged, albeit subtly on social media, questions from fans about similarities to Pokémon. BGS Studios admits drawing inspiration from the iconic series, yet asserts that there are sufficient distinctions between the two games to prevent any possible copyright issues.
As a passionate gamer diving back into the world of Pokémon, I can tell you that our goal is to capture the essence of nostalgia while simultaneously introducing fresh, exclusive features that have never been seen in Pokémon games before. We’re working hard to ensure an unforgettable experience!
In response to a query about copyright, BGS Studios stated, “While we drew inspiration from a deeply nostalgic reference, every individual pixel and coding line is uniquely created by us. Moreover, we’re incorporating mechanics that weren’t part of the original reference, so it will resonate with the original while still offering something new.
TopMob attempted to contact BGS Studios for more information regarding the resemblances and any possible worries or concerns, but these efforts have remained unanswered at the time of publication.
