- Sony faces the challenge of regaining audience trust and interest after recent missteps with Spider-Man Universe.
It’s being speculated that Sony might not yet have concluded its Spider-Man Universe saga, as a recent gossip suggests they are adopting a different approach which some enthusiasts believed should have been their original game plan.
The Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) got off to a robust start with Tom Hardy’s Venom movie, which garnered mixed opinions from critics but thrived at the ticket counters. Its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, also did relatively well despite being released during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic when some cinema-goers were hesitant to visit theaters. Unfortunately, subsequent films like Morbius and Madame Web failed miserably at the box office for SSU. Even Venom 3 didn’t perform as well as its previous editions. The string of box office disappointments culminated with Kraven the Hunter performing so poorly that rumors spread Sony was abandoning its Spider-Man Universe plans altogether.
A source known as MyTimeToShineHello, who initially suggested Sony was considering returning Spider-Man to Marvel, has offered a fresh update on the franchise’s direction. Previously, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe focused on the villains and sidekicks of the web-slinger. However, according to MyTimeToShineHello, there are plans for spinoff films focusing on different versions of Spider-Man. It is important to note that this information has not been verified by Sony Pictures yet, so it should be treated with caution.
On Twitter, it appears fans are skeptical about Sony’s supposed plans for Spider-Man spinoffs. Some think focusing on different versions of Spider-Man is a good idea and should have been the original plan. Yet, others believe the success at the box office and positive reviews won’t happen unless the writing improves. One fan suggested resuming Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man films, an idea that gained traction after both actors reappeared alongside Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home, generating immense fan appreciation.
Due to Sony deciding not to include the title character, Spider-Man, in their universe, many fans feel that the Spider-Man Universe was destined to fail from the outset. Even though each SSU film received criticism for its writing, Sony may have drawn more audiences if their Spider-Man Universe had included the character whose absence they named the franchise after. While Venom started off well for the movie series, the villain-turned-antihero was a popular Marvel character. However, Morbius and Madame Web might be familiar to comic book enthusiasts, but it’s hard to argue that the average filmgoer was eagerly awaiting these characters to star in a feature film. Kraven the Hunter is one of Spider-Man’s most famous villains, but with the wall-crawler absent and due to past disappointments, moviegoers weren’t particularly keen on his standalone film either.
Although Sony intends to incorporate different versions of Spider-Man in their upcoming spinoff films, there is still much effort required to win back the audience’s confidence.
