Pokemon GO Ending Support for Some Devices Soon

Summary

  • Pokemon GO will soon be unplayable on some older mobile devices following a pair of updates that will end support for 32-bit Android devices.
  • Players using affected devices are advised to save login info and upgrade phones to continue playing after the updates drop in March and June 2025.
  • Despite the inconvenience, the coming year holds promise for the Pokemon franchise with planned and rumored game releases for 2025.

By March 2025, it appears that “Pokemon GO” will no longer be playable on several mobile devices due to an update affecting only 32-bit Android devices. If you’ve been using your phone for quite some time and haven’t upgraded, fans of “Pokemon GO” might want to consider trading in their device to continue enjoying the game.

A reality-enhanced walking game called Pokemon GO, where participants explore the actual world to discover and fight new Pokemon, is approaching its ninth anniversary this summer since it was initially released in July 2016. Although earlier statistics indicated a peak of approximately 232 million active players during its first year, the game continues to maintain popularity, with over 110 million players reportedly active within the last 30 days as per ActivePlayer data from December 2024.

Starting in March and June 2025, certain older phone models may no longer be compatible with Pokemon GO due to a series of updates. These changes will impact some Android devices downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy store, as well as 32-bit Android devices obtained through Google Play. However, 64-bit Android devices and all iPhone models should still be able to play the game without issue. This is part of Niantic’s efforts to improve the overall performance of Pokemon GO on more modern devices by discontinuing support for 32-bit Androids.

Pokemon GO Ending Support for the Following Devices

  • Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
  • Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
  • Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
  • LG Fortune, Tribute
  • OnePlus One
  • HTC One (M8)
  • ZTE Overture 3
  • Certain Android devices released before 2015

Developers advise players to securely store their login details for the game as they’ll continue to access their accounts even after upgrading to a newer phone model. However, until they obtain phones that can run the game post-March and June updates, they won’t be able to use their accounts, including any Pokemon GO Pokecoins they might have bought.

2025 is shaping up to be an exciting time for Pokemon fans, as Pokemon Legends: Z-A has yet to confirm its release date and whispers of other games such as remakes of Pokemon Black and White and a fresh addition to the Let’s Go series are in the air. The details for Pokemon GO this year remain undisclosed, but a potential leak pointing towards a Pokemon Presents event on February 27 could shed light on what’s to come.
