Sebastian Stan, a cast member from Marvel Studios’ movie, likened it to one of the 80s’ most acclaimed coming-of-age films in popular culture.

The movie titled “Thunderbolts” boasts a star-studded cast reprising their roles as some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most intriguing anti-heroes. Heading this team are Stan, playing Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Lewis Pullman as Sentry. Some have likened this team to a blend between the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy due to their characters’ debuts in different MCU films, but Sebastian Stan himself seems reluctant to use that description for “Thunderbolts”.

Previously, Stan likened Thunderbolts* to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. However, in a recent Deadline interview, he changed his comparison, stating that Thunderbolts* is more similar to The Breakfast Club, a 1985 John Hughes-penned teen comedy about self-discovery. Stan emphasized that Thunderbolts* can’t be compared to any previous MCU film due to the unique ensemble of actors and characters. He was particularly enthusiastic about the cast’s chemistry and shared his belief that viewers will enjoy seeing it on screen, describing it as a mix between The Breakfast Club, with its distinct atmosphere, humor, and authenticity.

Stan clarified his statement about “Thunderbolts” being genuine, pointing out that the actors performed authentic stunts and utilized less computer-generated imagery (CGI). He went on to say, “When you see a vehicle exploding, it’s a real explosion – not CGI.” Essentially, Marvel aimed for this production to have an authentic feel, as there were numerous practical effects used in the film. This could well be appreciated following criticisms about poor CGI in recent MCU films like Ant-Man 3.

Although a superhero movie like Thunderbolts and a teen comedy like The Breakfast Club may not appear similar initially, it isn’t hard to understand why Stan would make that comparison. Just as The Breakfast Club revolves around a group of individuals from diverse backgrounds who bond after being compelled to spend time together, the same dynamic can be observed in Thunderbolts. Granted, the reasons that bring the Thunderbolts together are quite dissimilar to those that unite the Breakfast Club members. With early screenings of Thunderbolts reportedly generating favorable responses, Stan’s comparison to the cherished The Breakfast Club suggests positive prospects for the upcoming MCU film if his analysis holds true.
