Nintendo Comments on Latest Switch 2 Leak

Summary

  • In a rare move, Nintendo has commented on Genki’s Switch 2 leak that came out of CES 2025.
  • A company representative noted that Nintendo isn’t an official participant in this year’s CES, so none of the Switch 2 imagery emerging from the show can be considered official.

Nintendo has spoken up about the recent Switch 2 rumors surfacing from CES 2025, confirming that the images being shared online are not authentic representations of their official product. This simple statement serves as a rare occasion where Nintendo addresses product leaks, offering some insight into their usual approach to such matters.

Since late 2024, there have been numerous leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2. This could be due to it starting mass production around that time. Recently, accessory manufacturer Genki displayed what appeared to be a prototype of the next-generation Switch at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Photos of their dummy product quickly spread on social media platforms.

In an unusual step, Nintendo made a statement about these leaked designs following a question from Sankei Shimbun. A representative from the company stated that these images and videos of Genki’s Switch 2 replica are not authentic, as confirmed by the Japanese media outlet. Furthermore, Nintendo explained that they will not be participating in CES 2025 at all, which means any Switch 2 visuals coming from the trade show cannot be considered official promotional materials.

Official or Not, Genki’s Nintendo Switch 2 Replica Could Be Accurate

It appears Nintendo did not verify if Genki’s Switch 2 replica was accurate. However, this dummy device might still be a reliable depiction of the upcoming console due to its consistency with recent leaks and rumors about the product. The main differences between the replica and the original 2017 Switch are its slightly larger size and an extra button. This additional button, resembling the left Joy-Con’s square capture button, is located below the right Joy-Con’s home button and labeled “C.” However, the purpose of this button remains a mystery at this point.

Eddie Tsai, Genki CEO, didn’t have any insights regarding the enigmatic C button, however, he did disclose some speculated details about the Switch 2. Among these, he suggested that instead of using sliding rails, the console’s Joy-Cons will adhere magnetically to the device itself. Furthermore, Tsai proposed a potential feature where the controllers could function like a mouse, an idea that has been hinted at by several other sources as well.

For the next 80 days, Nintendo has time to fulfill its promise made last year about revealing the successor to the Nintendo Switch. This unveiling falls within their fiscal year 2024, which ends on March 31st, 2025. The new console may not appear in stores until at least the second quarter of 2025. As for cost, there are whispers that the Nintendo Switch 2 could sell for approximately $399.
