8. Doki Doki Literature Club
Whatever Happened to the Cutesy Dating Sim?
The Doki Doki Literature Club gained global popularity shortly after its debut. People shared it with a grim caution not to research it prior to playing, although the content warning at the start might have set off warning signals in gamers’ minds.
At first sight, the protagonist appears to be an ordinary teenager attending high school who has joined a literature club, delighting in the fact that he’s the only member aside from four adorable girls. The atmosphere is incredibly sweet and stereotypically anime, much like any other visual novel based on anime aesthetics. He spends time with these girls, exchanging and creating poetry…everything seems perfectly ordinary. However, it’s almost too perfect, too routine. But then the game takes a bizarre turn, introducing the player to time loops, glitchy graphics, and a chilling fourth-wall break, making for an eerie and horrifying experience.
7. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes
A Late-Game Twist Changes Everything
In the third installment of the Dark Pictures Anthology, it could very well be the most distinctive addition to the series. Notably, this game incorporates combat, featuring a higher volume of Quick Time Events than usual for Supermassive Games. The story unfolds in an Iraqi desert, where a military team descends upon a village suspected of harboring a chemical weapons stockpile. However, events take a surprising turn when they unexpectedly find themselves descending into subterranean caves beneath the surface – a location that holds secrets dating back thousands of years.
Following the signature style of the Dark Pictures, players are constantly faced with unsettling obstacles, and as the story unfolds, new details emerge. The genre shifts from action horror to full-fledged sci-fi when it’s disclosed that the bloodthirsty creatures are extraterrestrial beings, leading to a significant shift in mood. This unexpected revelation, while somewhat clichéd, adds an intriguing twist to the narrative, but becomes somewhat excessive when the game transitions into Salim delivering heavy blows to the alien creatures.
6. Resident Evil 5
Wesker Goes Full Cartoon Villain
Resident Evil 4 skillfully blended terror and action, earning it a place among fans’ favorites in the series. It masterfully maintained this balance, which was further refined in the 2023 remake. Resident Evil 5 served as a sequel to the original story, reuniting Chris Redfield with his former boss and ally Sheva Alarm, to confront new challenges together.
In this edition, the emphasis shifted towards intense action sequences, with relentless waves of adversaries appearing in each stage, culminating in colossal boss battles. The arch-villain in this game was Albert Wesker, a character who was more outrageous than a cartoon supervillain. He performed acrobatic feats like backflips and Matrix-style dodges to dodge bullets while mocking the protagonist, Chris, and expressing his ambition to rule the world. This over-the-top portrayal of a villain was one of the game’s most memorable aspects.
5. Remothered: Tormented Fathers
A Convoluted Plot That is Hard to Follow
The game Remothered: Tormented Fathers was heavily anticipated as a tribute to the original horror game Clock Tower. With high expectations, it set out on its mission. In this story, Rosemary Reed visits the Felton mansion to probe into the disappearance of their daughter Celeste. However, her intentions are revealed and she’s promptly asked to leave. Determined not to let that deter her, Rosemary devises a plan to secretly reenter the mansion to continue her investigation.
Here’s where the chilling tale commences, as evading diverse antagonists can often be an anxiety-inducing experience. As the player delves deeper into the game, the narrative progresses, shedding light on Celeste’s significance; however, things soon become muddled, and what was initially a straightforward story transforms into one that appears to have incorporated every conceivable trope, leading to a complex, over-the-top narrative. This can result in a confusing plotline, which may not work entirely in the game’s favor, particularly given its somewhat sensitive handling of gender identity issues.
4. Parasite Eve
An Explosive Experience
Reminiscent of a chilling horror game from the PlayStation 1 era, Parasite Eve offers an unforgettable journey, from its shocking start to its dramatic and somewhat gloomy ending. The story begins with Aya enjoying a peaceful evening at the opera, but the rest of the audience, her date, and the actress on stage suddenly disintegrate in a terrifying explosion, setting the pulse racing. Melissa seems to understand the situation, but before Aya can arrest her, she transforms into a monstrous creature and flees.
In this over-the-top tale that just keeps getting more outlandish, players witness characters bursting during gameplay, and there’s plenty of chatter about mitochondria. To add to the madness, a character named Melissa transforms into Eve, with ambitions to give birth to an Ultimate Being. This rollercoaster journey definitely takes things to the max, but Parasite Eve is an exceptional horror game that any classic fan should experience at least once. What makes it even more enticing is that completing the game grants access to the true boss.
3. Deadly Premonition
Eccentric is an Accurate Descriptor for the Entire Game
As a dedicated gamer immersed in the world of mystery and intrigue, I find myself thrust into a chilling narrative unfolding across the United States. A string of gruesome murders, each marked by eerie ritualistic elements and traces of red seeds at every grisly scene, have sent shockwaves throughout the nation. The relentless FBI agent Francis York Morgan is my avatar in this tale, compelled to venture into the tranquil, enigmatic town of Greenvale – a place that recently bore witness to a murder eerily mirroring the others. With each passing day and every new clue uncovered, I’m drawn deeper into this captivating whodunit, determined to expose the malevolent force behind these heinous acts before another soul meets an untimely end. So far, it seems like a classic case of cat-and-mouse, but I sense that there’s more to this story than meets the eye.
In the realm of gaming, I’ve found myself immersed in a wildly eccentric world that goes beyond the norms set by Twin Peaks. This game, Deadly Premonition, takes over-the-top to a whole new level. As York, I journey through various dimensions, from the White Room and the Red Room, where I encounter strange entities like the Forest or the Red Tree, symbolizing good and evil. My companion, Zach, is always there, unseen but not unheard of. His presence stirs doubts in the minds of the NPCs, and even makes me question my own sanity. Is this just a case of an unreliable narrator, or does the game itself break the fourth wall? The mystery unfolds as I delve deeper into this intriguing adventure.
2. Lollipop Chainsaw
A Hilarious Splatstick Experience
The genre of Splatstick encompasses movies, games, or other media that lean towards the absurdly gruesome, and Lollipop Chainsaw certainly falls into this category. In the story, Juliet is on her way to meet her boyfriend Nick when a zombie epidemic erupts. As Nick rushes to shield Juliet from danger, he gets bitten by a zombie. To prevent his transformation into an undead creature, Juliet beheads him. Later, she equips herself with the chainsaw she finds and fights against the multitudes of the living dead.
In addition to a boyfriend’s talking decapitated head and a zombie armed with a chainsaw, there are demons added to the chaos, hailing from the Rotten World, who also have their eyes on Juliet. Though it may seem excessive, this outrageous storyline undeniably makes Lollipop Chainsaw an exceptional blend of comedy and horror, offering a thrilling and oddly captivating gaming experience.
1. Dino Crisis 3
Fake Dinosaurs in Space
Despite not being the most widely played game in the Dino Crisis series, this third installment certainly leaves an indelible mark on those who dared to venture into its divisive narrative. The story of gun-wielding humans battling dinosaurs might seem as extravagant as it gets. However, the setting undergoes a dramatic transformation, with both adversaries and champions finding themselves in outer space.
In a rather unexpected twist, prehistoric creatures and outer space might seem like an odd pairing, but the ingenious approach was to blend these two worlds by creating human-dinosaur hybrids – much like in the game ‘Dino Crisis 3′. This creative decision expanded the designers’ possibilities when designing enemies, however, it also led to a more elaborate plot compared to its predecessors, which might not have been universally beneficial. Nevertheless, for those captivated by dinosaurs and space, ‘DC3’ proved to be a treasure trove of excitement.
