The consistent high pace of Ryu Ga Gotoku releases will persist as “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” is scheduled for launch on February 20. Many enthusiasts eagerly anticipate returning to the boots of Goro Majima, taking on a leading role this time around. Although classified as a spin-off, the concept and gameplay of this upcoming release are promising signs that it could be one of the most distinctive additions yet to the esteemed “LaD” series.
In essence, the narrative and fundamental gameplay of “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” revolves around the same map of Hawaii that was initially presented in 2024’s “Infinite Wealth“. The studio behind RGG is known for extracting long-term value from its significant locations. However, consistently setting future “LaD” titles in Hawaii might prove challenging to creatively justify the storyline. Therefore, it would be advisable for the franchise to explore new settings rather than relying on Hawaii as a primary location for upcoming projects.
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Can Say Farewell to the Location in Style
The upcoming game titled “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” brings back the cherished character Goro Majima as the main figure. In this installment, Majima is stranded on the shores of Hawaii due to amnesia. Consistent with the style of “Like a Dragon”, Majima soon finds himself entangled in shady organizations active across the islands. Notably, he assumes command of his own pirate ship and embarks on nautical adventures.
During the January 9 RGG “Like a Dragon” Direct event, the studio revealed the thrilling naval battles in “Pirate Yakuza.” Players will have complete control over their ship’s appearance and weaponry, and the game includes boarding combat for a truly immersive pirate experience. Although the unconventional theme of “Pirate Yakuza” brings a new twist to the gameplay of “Like a Dragon” series, its Hawaiian setting is primarily an opportunity to maximize the potential of the vast “Infinite Wealth” location, but this can only stretch so far.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio manages to deliver top-notch games consistently by cleverly reusing assets, such as fight sequences and entire settings. Iconic locations from Japan-based franchises like Kamurocho, Sotenbori, and Isezaki Ijincho have been featured across multiple LaD titles for years, including spin-offs like the Judgment series. It’s challenging to maintain consistency if you rely on a setting like Hawaii in the same way.
Like a Dragon’s Narrative Ties to Japanese Settings Are Too Strong to Ignore
Certainly, Hawaii provided an intriguing and fitting backdrop for the global tale of “Infinite Wealth”, and it’s plausible that with the introduction of Pirate Yakuza, Majima could find himself stranded on its shores. However, extending the series narrative beyond Hawaii would seem rather implausible. The primary narratives within the “LaD” franchise have always been deeply rooted in Japan, leveraging Japanese-inspired settings effectively throughout their history. It wouldn’t be right to continue this storyline in Hawaii simply for the sake of utilizing the assets created for “Infinite Wealth”.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m excited about the innovative approaches taken by the studio in their upcoming RGG titles like “Project Century”. These games brilliantly demonstrate how they continue to breathe life into Japanese settings, keeping them captivating and original. It’s clear that relying on Hawaii as a major setting for future games may not be the best choice, given the studio’s knack for creating immersive Japanese environments.
That being said, “Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” still promises to be a fantastic addition to the franchise, skillfully leveraging the locational assets of “Infinite Wealth”. However, I believe it would serve best if this title marked a dramatic farewell to Hawaii, rather than paving the way for a continued focus on this map in future installments of the series.
