The popular “Call of Duty” series has a history of working together with various entities. For Halloween, they’ve introduced horror icons such as Jigsaw, Leatherface, Terrifier, and Ghostface into their first-person shooter games. They’ve also shown respect to other Microsoft-owned properties by incorporating elements from titles like “Fallout”, “Doom”, and “Diablo”. Action legends like Rambo, John McClane from “Die Hard”, Godzilla, King Kong, and more have made appearances in the series as well. It’s not surprising then that “Call of Duty” has partnered with “Squid Game” for its second season, but this latest collaboration stands out particularly.
The Squid Game event doesn’t just offer a unique battle pass loaded with themed prizes such as weapon designs and a Front Man character skin, but it has also expanded the collection of games available in its active titles. While there have been some issues with movement recognition, the Red Light, Green Light game is an entertaining replica of the most recognizable activity from Squid Game. The Squid Game mode in Call of Duty: Warzone has also gained popularity, even though a recent patch introducing bugs to the battle royale game. This mode invites players to rotate through various games with the ultimate goal of being the last one standing. However, among all these modes, none is more exceptional than the Pentathalon in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. In fact, it’s so engaging that it would be a real pity if it were removed once the event concludes on January 24.
Why Black Ops 6’s Pentathalon Game Mode Shines So Brightly
The primary advantage of the Pentathlon in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 lies in its versatility, and the significant influence this versatility exerts on the fundamental gameplay. This multi-faceted mode presents a series of changing objectives, such as:
1. Search and Retrieve
2. Domination
3. Hardpoint
4. Search and Destroy
5. Uplink/Safeguard (depending on the map)
Each objective rotation adds an exciting layer to the gameplay experience.
- Roulette: Players battle over an explosive Hand Cannon, which marks its user on the map but rewards a huge amount of points per kill.
- Piggy Bank Team Deathmatch: Players fight for kills to build up the number of points in the giant Squid Game Piggy Bank, which appears at the end of the two-minute time limit. Usually, picking this up will award its collector with all of their equipped streaks.
- Kill Confirmed, Domination, and Hardpoint: Traditional versions of these three objective modes appear, but with shapes instead of letters used to mark the zones and envelopes replacing dog tags.
For enthusiasts who appreciate playing Domination, Hardpoint, and some Deathmatch occasionally, they can enjoy all their favorites in a single game mode. This versatility keeps players alert, requiring them to swiftly adapt their tactics based on the triggered game mode. The dynamic switching of objectives also offers advantages such as preventing the frequent spawn-trapping seen in traditional Domination matches. Moreover, the Pentathlon rewards objective play significantly, encouraging players to strive for victory, which is a welcome change given the casual attitude many players have towards winning in typical Call of Duty matches. If the opposing team captures the Piggy Bank, the match can quickly tilt in their favor, as multiple streaks can be activated simultaneously.
The game includes an exceptional reward called the Young-hee doll, which functions similarly to Red Light, Green Light. If the opposing team moves during this phase, they will be immediately eliminated.
Keeping Pentathalon in Black Ops 6 Would Only Require Cosmetic Changes
As a passionate fan, I’m gladly optimistic about Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 maintaining the popular Pentathlon mode for multiplayer enthusiasts. While it would be a pity to part ways with the unique Squid Game influences such as shapes, envelopes, and the show’s music, the core gameplay experience would still remain exhilarating without these additions. Treyarch could easily restore the original Black Ops 6 elements by switching back to regular music, using traditional letters for objective zones, and reintroducing dog tags. Instead of a piggy bank, they could give it a new skin, perhaps transforming it into a vault or a collection of weapon cases. Given that Ransack has already received a Christmas-themed makeover in the Ran-snack LTM, I believe it’s plausible and desirable for Treyarch to revamp Pentathlon as well, ensuring its longevity and continued enjoyment by fans like me.
