Currently underway is the initial Minor tournament of the Call of Duty League, where all professional teams are battling it out for a $20,000 one-time prize. In the first round of competition, Vegas Falcons, Miami Heretics, LAG M8, and Vancouver Surge have already been knocked out of contention.
In an unexpected turn of events, Minnesota Rokkr outplayed LAG M8 in a dramatic reversal of fortunes, resulting in a disheartening loss for LAG with no victories to their name thus far – a disappointing start to the season.
Expectations Tapered
So far this season, Team LAG M8, comprising three veteran world champions and a promising rookie, hasn’t been able to notch a victory against any other CDL teams. In many instances, they’ve come close to claiming a win, but have consistently fallen short by just a few steps. This pattern has persisted even in the Minor.
In the initial match of CDL Major I, team LAG M8 took a 2-0 lead following two tightly contested victories. However, things shifted during the Control where Rokkr dominated with a 3-0 score. This momentum seemed to unsettle LAG, who were then heavily defeated by Rokkr in the subsequent Hardpoint and final Search & Destroy rounds, effectively being overrun.
The team was understandably muted on social media following the loss:

Over yonder, my gaming squad, the Vegas Falcons, got knocked out of the tournament without snatching a single map victory. It wasn’t easy, going up against OpTic Texas in round one, but we gave it our all. However, in the end, we were given the boot rather harshly and sent packing from the competition.
Unfortunately, the Falcons have one of the poorest records in CDL history at present, with a win/loss record of 0 – 5 and a game-win percentage of only 14.2%. On the other hand, Optic Texas is currently playing superbly, which makes Vegas’ loss less surprising.
The Next Round
As we move into the next round, four enormous matches have been lined up:
- Royal Ravens vs. Cloud 9 NY
- Boston Breach vs. OpTic Texas
- LA Thieves vs. Atlanta FaZe
- Toronto Ultra vs. Minnesota Rokkr
Teams such as the Ravens, Boston, LAT, and Ultra advanced directly to the tournament without having to play again in the initial qualifying round due to their exceptional performance. So far, they have proven to be dominant forces in the tournament, with the Royal Ravens standing out as the clear leaders, boasting a flawless record and winning 75% of their games.
LAT and Ultra follow close behind with identical records of 4- 0 and a 70.5% win percentage.
As a gamer, I can feel the heat ramping up in this tournament – but I know it’s not going to drag on forever. By Sunday night, there’ll be a champion standing tall and walking away with a cool $20,000 fatter wallet.
