- The upcoming game is the first-ever entry in the franchise to have earned the Steam Deck Verified badge.
2K has confirmed that Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is compatible with the Steam Deck. This means the upcoming game in the popular strategy series will add to the collection of 4X strategy games that run smoothly on the Steam Deck.
The announcement for “Civilization 7” was made during the Summer Game Fest held in June 2024. Exactly two months later, the exact release date for this strategy game was confirmed as February 11th.
Before the launch of the game on the market, publisher 2K has shared via Twitter that Civilization 7 has been awarded the Steam Deck Verified badge. This means the upcoming game will work seamlessly with Valve’s handheld device, providing extensive support for its controls and native resolution.
Civilization 7 Is the Series’ First-Ever Steam Deck Verified Game
The upcoming “Civilization” game is the first in its series to receive the Steam Deck Verified badge. Previously released “Civilization 6,” while still playable on the handheld, did not qualify for this badge due to certain issues such as displaying non-Steam-Deck controller icons at times and requiring text input through the on-screen keyboard. Additionally, small text that can be hard to read on the Steam Deck’s 7.4-inch screen was cited among the reasons for “Civilization 6” not receiving the badge. However, it’s worth noting that despite these issues, “Civilization 6” generally functions well with the device, considering it was released over five years before the Steam Deck.
Steam Deck Won’t Be the Only Way to Play Civilization 7 on the Go
Games aiming for the Steam Deck Verified badge not only need to work with the device’s controls and native resolution but also have to meet a specific performance level on the handheld. It’s no wonder that Firaxis was able to get Civilization 7 running smoothly on Valve’s portable device, given that the game was already planned for release on the Switch, which is less powerful than the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck outperforms the minimum system requirements of Civilization 7, which include 8GB of RAM, a GTX 1050 or RX 460 graphics card, and either an i5-4690 CPU or Ryzen 3 1200—or equivalent hardware.
In addition to PCs and Nintendo Switch, “Civilization 7” is also set to debut on the most recent models of Xbox and PlayStation consoles. This marks a significant shift in the series tradition, as it will be the first game in the franchise to launch simultaneously on both PCs and consoles on the same day. Previous titles were either exclusive to PC or only made available on other platforms after their initial release.
