As a passionate movie reviewer, I eagerly anticipate the reuniting of the “Gaang” in an exciting time-jumping journey spanning over three upcoming projects for the beloved series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” However, one cherished cast member may not reprise their role as initially expected following the recent announcements.
The animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, initially popular among children, surpassed typical expectations by captivating audiences across various age groups and demographics. After the conclusion of its third season, the franchise expanded into numerous forms, including video games, board games, literature, comics, a live-action movie, a Netflix sequel, and another series on Netflix titled Avatar: The Legend of Korra. Even as Netflix’s second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to thrive following the success of its first season, the intellectual property is still expanding with plans for additional Avatar content.
A fresh animated movie based on “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has been verified for Paramount, titled “Aang: The Last Airbender.” This film is set to initiate a trilogy and will reportedly concentrate on the same principal characters from the original series, but as mature individuals. It was assumed that the original cast would return, along with Dave Bautista voicing a villain for the first time in the franchise. However, it appears that one significant character may not be returning. As per Popverse reports, Dante Basco, who originally voiced Zuko, dismissed any involvement in the upcoming project during the “Avatar” reunion panel at 2024’s Florida Supercon, stating, “That’s a rumor… I only have one voice, though. They’re all going to sound very similar.
It’s disheartening to learn that Dante Basco may not be voicing Zuko in the upcoming project, as many fans and media outlets had anticipated his involvement. In the series “The Legend of Korra,” Basco was replaced due to the character’s advanced age requiring a more mature voice (effectively provided by Bruce Allen Davison). Fans have longed for Basco’s return in any capacity since then. Although the new film is set in the future, it isn’t so distant from the original series that Zuko would sound drastically different. The main appeal of the upcoming project lies in the reunion of the original Avatar team and their new adventures. For many devoted fans, this reunion also meant the return of the original voice cast to some extent. Moreover, Zuko’s role is challenging to assign to a new voice actor due to its significance in the Avatar franchise’s lore across the four nations. If the project delivers as expected and explores the rich history of the Avatar universe, then Zuko’s voice will play a crucial role throughout a significant portion of the story.
It’s doubtful that the creators of the upcoming animated film trilogy can find someone as well-suited to play Zuko as Basco, but it doesn’t mean the new actor won’t deliver a solid performance. Only time will reveal how these and any other cast changes will be received by longtime fans. For now, the Netflix series continues, with its lead teasing a darker tone for season two of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Details about who will voice the characters in the beloved group, known as the gaang, are yet to come, but once announced, the project will be one step closer to reaching screens globally.
You can currently stream “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix, and the movie adaptation is set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025.
