Max’s principal opponent is a clandestine U.S. government organization named Manticore, from where she managed to escape. Manticore specializes in developing and molding super-soldiers, who are then trained to carry out assassinations for undercover operations. A gang of these escaped young soldiers set off an electromagnetic blast device, which wrecked communication networks within the U.S., causing chaos. Ten years later, Manticore remains steadfast in its pursuit of recovering its lost assets, while the fugitive super-soldiers, known as X-5s, aim to reunite.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, there was a surge of shows with strong female leads such as Xena: Warrior Princess and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Dark Angel was definitely part of this trend. Despite an impressive debut season, maintaining such a costly show for Fox proved challenging. The initial two-hour premiere episode alone cost approximately $10 million, and each subsequent episode in Season 2 had a budget of around $1.3 million. As a result, the studio needed to invest heavily in promotions, including trailers, billboards, and marketing campaigns, treating it like a major motion picture project.

Even Cameron and fellow creator Charles H. Eglee harbored some doubts about the show’s potential for massive success.
