The anticipated release of Pokemon Generation 10 might still be a while away, given that Pokemon Legends: Z-A has been confirmed as the upcoming main series installment. However, the significance of this milestone in the cherished franchise has sparked numerous rumors and speculations. A significant topic among these discussions revolves around the setting for Generation 10, more specifically where the game’s map might be modeled after in the real world. While many believe that the region in Generation 10 could mirror Italy or Australia, there is a compelling argument to suggest that Pokemon should revisit a Japan-inspired region instead.
Previous versions of the Pokemon series have drawn their in-game maps from various regions of Japan, but more recently, they’ve been inspired by European countries like France, the UK, and Spain/Portugal. However, there are still some Japanese regions that haven’t been used yet. Since Gen 10 is a significant milestone for the series, it could be fitting to return to its roots and base the game on one of these unused Japanese regions.
Pokemon Still Hasn’t Covered Some of Japan’s Most Interesting Geography
A Region Inspired by Parts of Japan’s Chugoku and Shikoku Regions Makes a Lot of Sense
The Pokemon series has drawn inspiration from various parts of real-world Japan for its regions, but the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, particularly their western halves which encompass prefectures such as Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Shimane, Kochi, and Ehime, have yet to be explored in the series. Notably, these areas offer rich possibilities that have not been tapped by the franchise up until now. Although the Teal Mask DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduces a new location called Kitakami, it is believed that this region is modeled after the northern Tohoku region rather than the western regions of Chugoku and Shikoku.
Current Pokemon Regions Inspired By Japan
Generation | Pokemon Region | Real-World Japanese Inspiration |
---|---|---|
Gen 1 | Kanto Region | Kanto |
Gen 2 | Johto Region | Kansai |
Gen 3 | Hoenn Region | Kyushu |
Gen 4 | Sinnoh Region | Hokkaido |
The city of Cianwood, found in the Johto region, appears to be modeled after Tokushima City in Shikoku, while the overall region resembles Kansai.
Besides the areas in the first four primary Pokémon games, the spin-off series of Pokémon Ranger has also incorporated maps reminiscent of various parts of Japan. The Fiore Region from the original Pokémon Ranger appears to be modeled after western Kansai and eastern Chugoku regions, specifically Okayama and Hyogo prefectures. Similarly, Almia Region in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia seems to resemble the Oshima and Hiyama prefectures of Hokkaido. The Oblivia Region from Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs appears to be based on the Oki Islands, which are located north of Chugoku. However, this leaves open the possibility for new regions to explore in both western Chugoku and Shikoku.
What a Pokemon Region Inspired by This Area Could Look Like
It’s rather unexpected that the Pokemon series doesn’t seem to feature a city resembling Hiroshima, a city crucial to Japan’s industrial development as the largest in the Chugoku region. Notable cities within this area include Matsuyama, known for one of Japan’s remaining feudal castles, and Yamaguchi, often referred to as the Western Kyoto due to its rich history and culture. Incorporating these three cities into the series would offer a wide range of historical settings, reflecting various aspects of Japanese history.
As I delve into the world of virtual gaming, I can’t help but imagine how incredible it would be to have a Pokémon region inspired by the Seto Inland Sea! This stunning body of water divides Shikoku from Hiroshima prefecture and is home to the breathtaking Setonaikai National Park. The unique blend of land masses, surrounded by an island-dotted sea, would create a vibrant ecosystem teeming with various Pokémon species, making it a dreamland for any aspiring Trainer!
