Strategy and Wargaming News -1st January – Wargame Design Studios Goes Medieval, Ultimate General Is In Trouble, Hooded Horse Takes Over Shadow Gambit And More!

Greetings, valued readers! I trust you had a fantastic Christmas and are stepping into 2025 in good health and high spirits, eager for the new year’s possibilities. Now that 2024 has concluded, let’s swiftly catch up on the news headlines from December.

Wargame Design Studios Goes Medieval

Among all the predictions I had for the year 2025, never did it cross my mind that Wargame Design Studios would venture into the medieval era, let alone consider it a remote possibility. But when they unveiled their upcoming series titled Sword & Siege, I was taken aback. What’s more intriguing is their focus on an under-explored topic in gaming: the Crusades. The gameplay promises 10-minute turns and 40-meter hexes, providing a unique experience where you can switch between playing as Crusaders and Muslim forces.

A diverse array of military units will be present, including foot soldiers wielding swords, axes, maces, and bows, mounted troops with lances, swords, and bows, as well as siege engines like the Mangonel, Trebuchet, Onager, Ballista, Battering Rams, and Siege Towers.

I’m really eager to find out if the engine can accurately portray the complexities of medieval battles, and what particularly excites me is that the scale, as suggested by the provided screenshots, seems accurate!

Game Labs Loses Its Leadership

Unfortunately, along with exciting updates comes some disappointing ones. Regrettably, Game-Labs, creators of Ultimate General: Gettysburg and Ultimate General: Civil War, has recently parted ways with two key members – Nick (Darth), the co-developer and lead developer, as well as Aleksandr Petrov, the producer, designer, and developer for Ultimate General: American Revolution.

Despite no updates on the studio’s future plans, Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts received a hasty last update, and Ultimate General: American Revolution was abruptly removed from Early Access and launched as a 1.0 final version. The majority of players expressed their dissatisfaction with both games in their Steam reviews, as they found the titles to be underdeveloped at launch.

Hooded Horse Takes Over Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew

Following the unveiling of their alleged masterpiece, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, Mimimi Games shut down operations towards the end of 2023, attributing it to excessive development expenses and the intensifying workload in creating video games. Fortunately, a renowned strategy-focused publisher, Hooded Horse, purchased the rights to Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, although specifics were scarce. Hooded Horse also mentioned that no updates are currently planned. I remain optimistic that Mimimi’s final creation might receive some expansions in the future. At least we can expect it to be accessible for many years to come.

Hollywood Animal Demo

A fortnight ago, I mentioned Hollywood Animal as one of the games I’m eagerly waiting for in 2025. Surprisingly, the developers have brought forward their plans and released a demo available for immediate play – an unexpected early Christmas treat!

Age of Darkness: Final Stand Leaves Early Access

On January 15th, the long-awaited full release of the real-time strategy game “Age of Darkness: Final Stand” will be available, marking three years of continuous development in Early Access. This version 1.0 concludes the campaign and introduces cooperative play, enabling players to team up with other guardians of light to combat the forces of darkness. Although I haven’t written a review for this game yet, I have clocked over 100 hours of gameplay, and if you enjoy turtling tactics, you’ll likely find it quite enjoyable.

Chains of Freedom

Hey there fellow gamer! Just wanted to share some exciting news I stumbled upon online – it’s a game called “Chains of Freedom” coming in 2025! This turn-based strategy title takes place in Eastern Europe and puts you in charge of an elite squad of soldiers, uncovering a mysterious conspiracy with supernatural/fantastical elements that pique my interest. Can’t wait to dive into this one when it drops sometime next year!

MENACE Delayed To Fall 2025

Over the past few months, I’ve noticed MENACE hasn’t received any updates, which made me suspect that its release might be pushed back to autumn 2025. On the bright side, a thrilling new combat trailer has been unveiled, generating quite a buzz.

Commando: Origins Release Date Shifted

Title Change for Commandos: Origins: The original release date has been pushed back from late 2024 to March 2025 following a subpar showing at the Steam Fest. The developers felt they needed more time to fine-tune aspects like performance, AI behavior, and voiceovers before launching the game.

After completing the trial run, I must admit I wasn’t overly impressed. Given that Mimimi has been raising the bar for stealth and strategy games over the past ten years, it’s a letdown to find that Commandos doesn’t quite measure up in comparison, which is rather disheartening.

Broken Arrow New Gameplay

Since I wasn’t at my home computer during the multiplayer open beta of Broken Arrow, I unfortunately missed out on playing it. To tell you the truth, I’m actually more eager for its single-player experience rather than its multiplayer. The massive missions against AI opponents are exactly what I’m anticipating in the game.

Open Wheel Manager Leaves Early Access

Microprose’s Open Wheel Manager 2, which exited Early Access in December, seems to have gone largely unnoticed by many. If you’re captivated by Formula 1 and dream of running your own racing team, this game could be perfect for you. It’s worth checking out, as it boasts an impressive 74 “very positive” reviews.

Band of Crusaders Reaches 30,000 Wishlists

2025’s highly anticipated game, Band of Crusaders, where Europe’s Black Plague is depicted as a demonic invasion that you must fight against, recently hit 30,000 wishlists on its platform. The developer expressed gratitude for the support and hinted at some thrilling updates to come.
